Dont forget about DSL ( Damn Small Inux ) as that is great to I am currently playing with that within Qemu and it runs rapid.
Hi I was going to try DSL. After downloading and opening the WinRar files I got "Boot" "KNOPPIX", "Lost & found" and "Index". I'm a wee bit lost do I just burn the KNOPPIX file onto a CD or can I open it..... or have I done it all wrong again?
Cheers0 -

Don't open anything, burn the complete .iso file to a CD using ImgBurn .
Download and install ImgBurn, open it and select Burn image to CD, then browse to the downloaded .iso file, and click the appropriate buttons.
I'm not on Windows and can't remember the exact procedure, but I'm sure I'll be corrected if something is amiss!!Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Cheers guys (gals), the scanner is, like most of my stuff, from a skip and is a Canoscan FB320p.
SANE shows that model as "support recently added" so in theory it ~should~ work.
In theory the scanner on my Canon MP610 should work as well, but if I start up Xsane Image Scanner it just says "no device found". Don't know why - the scanner works fine with the Canon-supplied Linux drivers.0 -

Thanks Spud17 I used Nero to the same effect.
I've changed the bios sequence to begin with CDROM,it is an external drive, but I just get "Disk Boot Failure". Do I need to check the disc or is there something else?

Just found a solution that worked for my MP610 scanner. For anyone interested in using a scanner that requires a recently-added SANE backend, there's a good guide here on how to do it under Ubuntu:

I've used Nero to burn an ISO file with no problems in the past.
Is the external CD-ROM connected via USB? If you're lucky there will be an option to boot from a USB device in the BIOS, but some do and some don't.
If not and you've got a desktop PC there is probably space and a free IDE connector to temporarily install a CD drive just for the install.0 -
Ah, a nix user club, I'll check in.
Been using a different flavas of *nix for about four or five years but have never really got into the *buntu's
I like stability e.g. traditionally more of a 2.4 kernel brancher although I did usually setup two kernel options at boot (a 2.6)- amassing0 -

Yes, the CD is connected via a USB but I don't know if it's possible to boot from it the drives are D,E,F,SCSI and A,C. It is a desktop...could you please let me know what an IDE connector is.
