Is puppy the best for these veteran machines?
Ta
I have been using Puppy for quite a while now, I currently don't have it on any machine but have had it on about 4 in the past. It is fantastic and the hardware detection is ace. To install/run from live CD comfortably you need at least 256MB of Ram however it is possible to install it on one pc and the move the HDD to another if the PC does not have 256MB.
Dont forget about DSL ( Damn Small Inux ) as that is great to I am currently playing with that within Qemu and it runs rapid. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

Hi Dime Bar, I only have 64MB RAM and I haven't a clue how to move a HDD, not sure I want to! so, maybe try DSL?
Thanks0 -
D.K.
I run Puppy on some bits I put together, 350mhz pentium,192MB RAM and 1.5Gb hard drive.
It's fine for surfing the internet.
DSL system requirements.
DSL is pretty basic, also have a look at TinyMe, Useful articleMove along, nothing to see.0 -

Nice to see a few more fans, I have been playing around with xandros for the Asus EEEPC, terrible time trying to join it to Active Directory Domain though, still plugging away so watch this space. :cool:Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

i'm pretty much 100% linux these days.
Only thing i need to boot into Windows for is to sync my GF samsung mp3 player for her which is not recognised in Linux due to being an MTP device. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

It will work for straight forward printing if you set it up as a BJC 7000.
Ironically Ubuntu has the correct drivers, but I prefer the look of PCLOS, and it is easier to install.
Has anyone ever got a stand-alone scanner to work with Linux?Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Hey everyone. Nothing particular to add here just wanted to introduce myself as a Linux user. I use Ubuntu both at home and at work, which attracts some jealousy from a particular friend of mine who is also a Linux fan but is forced to use Windows XP at work. (We're both Software Engineers).
spud17, I have a HP ScanJet3100 that I've had working with Sane through The GIMP. I also now have a HP All-In-One jobby which also works with the same. No particular setup required, it just worked. Although I must admit the Sane interface is not pretty.
Thankfully the list of things I miss on Windows is pretty small:

Hmm, as it happens I can't think of anything. The only thing I really want for in Linux is decent support for my iPod Nano which upon plugging it in last time had a massive hissy fit and messed up its indexing and left it thinking there was no music on it.0 -

SANE has support for many stand-alone scanners, but it's a bit of a lottery - so for example a Canoscan LiDE 60 will work, but a LiDE 70 won't. There's a very complrehensive list on the SANE home page.
Incidentally, Canon has started to offer Linux drivers for some of it's products, downloadable from their website. One reason I chose their MP610 multifunction printer is that they offer Linux drivers for both printer and scanner components of that model.0 -

It works fine on XP, but not under Sane, but it is several years old.
But I'm no expert and it's no big deal at the end of the day.Move along, nothing to see.0
