So not to put off any beginners, but maybe I'm being too sensitive, as one of the Marx brothers said, he wouldn't want to join any club that would have anyone like him in it.
Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...

Good point, I shall change the title to "linux user thread", or any other suggestions before I make the change would be helpful.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Puppy Linux can also run in a window in Windows (?!?). There's probably many others too.
But if you don't want to install anything, many distros allow you to run them as Live-CDs, that is without actually installing themselves to the hard disk.

I have run several Linux distro's including puppy, Ubuntu, Knoppix and SME Server from Sun Microsystems VM Box within Windows XP, it works well, and it supports USB devices too.

you should be able to dual boot most linux distros with windows - just look on the support boards/forums relevant to the distro you want to use

I've been inspired by this thread. I have dug out my old Satellite 20CDT and rebooted it with the Puppy CD I made from an iso image and burnt with Nero. Nothing has happened. I'm not very technical, just fascinated to think I could find a use for an old laptop. Obviously I haven't got a clue. Any advise please?

Does it do anything at all?
If it gets to the screen that says Welcome to Puppy!
    Type

    puppy pnpbios=off

    At the prompt.

Or is it not getting that far?

For all those wanting to dual boot, here are 2 easy to use guides.

    Xp + Linux
    Definitive Guide

They both use Ubuntu, but make use of grub (grub is the program which manages what is booting).
grub is one of the main boot managers, so even if you are not using Ubuntu in a dual boot, the chances are you will come across it.
    Move along, nothing to see.

No I'm not getting anything at all. It has got Windows 98 installed. The hard drive is less than 2 GB. I felt quite nostalgic when I switched it on yesterday.
