Ubuntu 8.04 does very nearly everything I need it to - I hardly ever use XP now, and have never actual seen Vista anywhere other than in the occasional review on the TV.0

Well that is it, mfr's not writing drivers but they are all compiled in native C or C++, usually in Borland which is cross-platform.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

if you want to dig into the linux gentoo is a good way, you learn about stuff from the file system up. It shows you the dependencys of apps you want to run so you can cut out the crud which might leave the system open and is a great place to start bug stomping as by its nature if you run it in bleeding edge mode it really is and makes it easy. i was running reiser4 when it was still beta to speed up my /usr/portage dir and an early 2.5 kernel for kicks
oh and the gentoo forums are one of the best linux resources available.0 -
I am going to be too busy to help in a bit, but I think it's a brilliant idea. I would do if work wasn't about to take off.
Beginners: I wholeheartedly recommend you download a distro that uses RPMs (I like Blag, but use whatever you like), then go through the excellent online book Rute. You'll understand so much more afterwards. Google for it, it's the top result.0 -
As linux beginner I've had friendly advice on here, so a sticky thread would be great - wouldn't like to see another board on here as it might separate us off from the curious, who might just give it a go too.Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...0

Just been playing with puppy-eee linux this morning, going to try it out on my Eee PC as a replacement for Xandros. I am learning more and more everyday with linux and I am starting to become comortable with the BASH shell command line, which is very powerful.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want?
