    My imeasure readings

    3 bed semi - 2 adults 1 child

    Last wks spend

    Gas £3.89
    Elec £7.32

dd was off school ill so we used more electric with telly being on (plasma)
Week before last electric was only £5.88

We have been rated cat B

I have been making a real effort with electric running round turning everything off at the wall , and lights off at the back of people.

Cheryl just wanted say how sorry I am for your loss, take care hun. xx
  • Well guess who's 5/63 on imeasure :) I'm figuring their stats are a mess again - seems much more likely than that everyone else has got massively worse over the last few days.

This will not last - I just checked the electric and I'm already up on my electric use for last week and I don't take the weekly read till sunday  and it's freezing here tonight so guessing the heat will be on all night. And we've had visitors a few nights during the week so the heating was on more then too.

It's all gone quiet on this thread, maybe we're all feeling nervous now that we're into the dead of winter ;)
  • Well my gas has been 55KWH every day this week as opposed to around 30-35 so it must have been cold this week and the weekend looks equally bad

Quick question - we are starting to get every window with condensation on - never noticed before but this year we had cavity wall done - could this be affecting it?!

    I'm 5/63 too ???

This is definitely messed up. I was 5/63 two days ago and I certainly am now(just checked and taken a screen print).

    I'm loosing faith...
This space is available to rent... :D

When my mum had loft insulation in her bungalow, it made the condensation much much worse. She has now bought a dehumidifier.

In my house I dont really have it anywhere, apart from maybe 1 cm on the bedroom window if its been very cold.

But this last week, when I've been out early with the dog. I have noticed loads of peoples windows are running with it.

Our windows are condensating slightly through the night when curtains are shut and that's with double glazing and loft insulation. I have the dehumidifier running on a low setting and it's filling up (12L capacity) roughly twice per week, so I may turn that up to see what difference it makes. I must add that it helps dry the wet clothes when I can't hang them out, so that accounts for much of what it collects. :T No tumble dryer needed, still trying to sell the thing!

Storage heaters are on mid settings without boost, but they are automatically boosting at least twice per day, maintaining a temperature of around 16C (as opposed to 10C in old house) but the log fire in livingroom is contributing greatly to that.

These are my totals for the new house so far:
    Total amount spent since 04/11/08 - £59.04
    Total A rate units - 263 (227 daytime @ 12.88ppu & 36 nighttime @ 5.84ppu)
    Total B Rate units - 459 @ 5.18ppu (storage heating)

The nighttime units will increase slightly once I get the washing machine plumbed in next week and the heating units will increase as temperatures drop below zero. The only downside is no timer on the immersion heater and no back boiler to heat the water off the fire, so it's daytime units for hot water unless I get up about 4.30am then back up at 5.30am to switch it off again. We do have an electric shower, so that saves a bit compared to heating tank after tank of hot water.

I think I'll spend around £30 - £40 per week this winter, including logs & coal, as opposed to £50 - £60 per week in last house, so I'm fairly happy at that, especially as that's with 2 of us working from home fulltime. It's still pretty bad knowing we're using so much per day when some of you are using only a tiny fraction of this, but we don't have many options. I was never aware of how little some people used before comparing, but I guess it's down to the fact I've not got oil heating and very few places I have lived have had a connection to mains gas. :D Come to think of it, I've always lived in a house that had someone home all the time, so I've never even wondered about how much less energy would be used if the house was empty for most of the day. :o I think I prefer paying for the priviledge of working from home. :D

Thanks for tha - we also had our loft insulated so wonder if that is causing it - it looks terrible today - the worst in the street

Do the dehumidifiers use much electricity?

My dehumidifier is my most useful purchase of 2008, I only wish I'd bought one sooner. It only uses a max of 200w per hour, but I've hardly ever used it on full power, plus that includes an air purifier. It probably uses about 1 kwu every 24 hours when it's running constantly. Best bit is that it's on wheels, so I just wheel it from room to room and I can sit it next to the clothes airer to help dry the laundry. Mine also fits into the corner beneath the coat rack, so wet jackets benefit from it too. I can recommend one to anyone who has any problems with dampness, musty smells or condensation. It may be a big outlay but if it helps prolong the life of your decor, windows and doors, it's well worth it.

We've had people at home full time since April 2000, but until July 2006 the person at home in the day was DH -- and as he worked nights and slept through the day it didn't mean heaps extra on the heating bills ;)

My bills are currently coming in at around £16/week. This time last year they were around £14, so given the rise in costs (even though I fixed my prices at the start of July) I'm pretty happy about this -- especially as I know I can do better once elder DS goes back to Army camp (hence no laptop and X-box and phone charger left plugged in and on 24/7 !!!!!)

But given that when I was at work my bus pass cost the equivalent of £11.30/wk, that's a charge I can now offset against my fuel bills :rolleyes2
