  • oh dear this is my worst week so far 54/57 . I'm on an E and with 64 kilos of CO2 last week. I've got the windows open at the moment for airing despite the cold weather.Temperature is just below 10C. Going to try and be a bit braver this week. Had some friends round on monday and tuesday so the heating was on all evening and through the night. Still relatively low compared to last year though.

Energy use is 1,857 kWh (Gas: 1,396kWh | Electricity: 461kWh)

Well I'm not heating my home at the moment - so the evening temp is around 10-14c, wrapping up warm in lots of layers and using a hot water bottle for heat if I get cold.

Lighting is all from economy bulbs - 2x11w in the room I'm using most, and I'm switching them off if I'm leaving a room for more than an hour or so.

Cooking - veg is done in an electric steamer, which runs for about 20 mins a day, and meat is done on one gas ring on the hob - so pretty economical to run.

Washing clothes is all being done in a cold wash with a mix of cheap bio liquid, washing soda, and white vinegar in the final rinse, and all comes out clean and fresh. Drying is done on an outside line when possible, or in the conservatory with plenty of ventilation if it's too wet outside. I've stopped using a tumble drier.

Washing up is also being done cold. Only problem there is that some fats congeal, but again, washing soda and detergent works well.

The only hot water I'm using is for a shower once a day, for which I use the gas central heating boiler - leaving it on for about 40 minutes in total to heat the tank of water. I turned the pilot light off last night having discovered it wasting too much gas and giving no heat into the room in return - so will have to reignite it for use once a day - just like lighting the gas ring.

My 'luxury' is the pc - a desktop that uses just under 100w with the screen on high brightness for watching a movie, down to 75w for normal surfing. I turn it all off when I'm not actually sat in front of it now, which I never used to do.

There are good reasons why I'm living like this at the moment - I'm not a masochist:D

For comparison, I found some records of gas and electric consumption from when I didn't have to economise - one very cold week in Jan 07. I used 558kwh of gas (last week was 66), and 108kwh of electricity (last week was 21).

Thank you Decola for that information. Has given me quite a few ideas to reduce my bill now. Going to try and get it down this week! :T

Gas and electric sky high this week 282kwh gas and 63kwh electric. This is maininly due to the bitter cold weather we have had this week, we've also had a lot of meals cooked in the oven so that has increased the electric useage quite a bit. We'll see if we can cut back at all this week (to be honest we really really need to.
  • I'm not doing i-measure but I am keeping a track on the Eon energy tracker and when I popped in last month's figures our gas was an average of 20kwh per day when it was 75kwh a day average for the same month last year and for electric it's 7kwh instead of 10 last year.

I should say though that we are buying logs for the fire but have only spent about £50 so for on a half load plus firelighters and kindling....oh and an odd sack of logs becuase we ran out before the delivery. Do need to sort out one to see us over Xmas but it's cheap in comparison to the cost of gas ch.

Once again I'd really not have been looking at this so closely if it wasn't for this thread so thanks again.

Do all keep warm though it's meant to be a tad unpleasant over the next few days.

This has been my highest usage week so far since signing up to imeasure. I had my mother to stay from Wednesday evening until today, and my Dad was here on Sunday night, and I had Thurs/Fri/today as leave. So as well as having the heating on for more hours a day, it's been in more rooms (spare room) more regularly (I don't always heat the sitting room on weekday evenings). There has also been more cooking, washing up, showers, coffee-making and hot-water bottle making going on!

I am also in the process of having my utility room redone (new plastic window, new floor with damp-proof membrane, latex screed & terracotta tiles, walls plasterboarded with reflective insulation in cavity and SOMETHING done to insulate the concrete roof, although we're not sure what yet, so suggestions welcome...) and we've started the drying out process this week, so the electric heater (100w) has been on quite a bit. However, no WM/TD/DW/MW...

    Last week you spent:
    • £11.24 on gas
    • £6.24 on electricity
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (20 weeks ago):
    • £73.67 on gas
    • £72.72 on electricity
Dehumidifier went on in the utility room today, so that may well put the electricity up further. Scarily, the weekly gas usage is more than my monthly DD (luckily I'm about £100 in credit on gas alone at the moment), and although there may be some days when I don't get home until late, so don't put it on in the evenings, I can't see it being considerably less between now and March.
