Got my new halogen from Costco..£29.99 in total(that includes the vat)...only problem is that i have to return to Costco with the old broken one, because the guy wouldnt accept it as a return under guarantee because i hadnt packed the tongs and one of the racks(thankfully i hadnt thrown them out)apparantly they will only accept if all the original items in the box are also returned.

I haven't got one, sigh, but aaccording to my friendly electrical appliance repair man the reason these ovens die so quickly is oil/fat dripping on to the bulbs. Apparently fires are quite common too and the new Tefal machines that do chips in a spooonful of oil have the same problem.
Not that that is why I haven't got one. I still want one because you are all so enthusiastic about them. I just never have the spare cash. :(

Hi ksh,im afraid your friendly electrical appliance repair man needs to do his homework,;)yes the very first edition Tefal Actifrys had a fault, but that was resoveled years ago by fitting a vent into the newer models,I also have an actifry and i love it(kitchen gadget addict:o)...also as others have mentioned fat/oil cannot drip onto a halogen oven bulb as the bulb is at the top of the appliance.never heard of halogen ovens going on fire either, are you sure he knows what a halogen oven is?

Apologies if there is already a thread re this but I am thinking of buying a halogen oven and have just been checking them out on A**zon. I would love some of your expert advice before I part with my hard earned cash.

There's only the two of us and although I do try to make sure the oven is full whenever I use it sometime my OH uses it just to heat up a pasty or pie as he doesn't like the way the microwave affects the pastry. Can you cook a full meal in them ? Although the advertising bumf gives the capacity in litres that doesn't really mean anything to me as I still tend to do things in old money :p

Any pros or cons would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Thank you so much :T
  • I would not be without mine, also have one in the caravan. Don't have an oven as I have been using halogen for about 5 years and didn't want an oven in this new house.

    Hi

We are thinking of replacing our microwave with a halogen oven.

What I need to know is whether it is useful for reheating already cooked food? At the moment we would just "zap" it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Is it as practical in a halogen oven?

    Thanks!

Ooooo, that depends :D The microwave is great for re-heating and it does it quicker.
However, if you have pastry or anything that is not suitable for microwave then the halogen is perfect. Remember it is an oven but quicker and cheaper than an oven. Also, you can put the aluminium trays in the halogen, along with anything else you would normally use for cooking in an oven, except plastic of course, like the trays from the chinese take-away.

I have both and rarely do I use my oven, always using my halogen but would not part with my microwave. My own opinion is that it could replace your oven but not your microwave.

My halogen does heat up food very well, but not as quickly as the microwave. The advantage is that the halogen will conserve the crispiness where the microwave doesn't.

I replaced my conventional gas cooker with a halogen oven, but I definitely need the microwave as well. It can speed up reheating if that's the main thing you do, nuke it first to heat through then bung it in the halogen to crisp up the topping/crust.
