So I have told the boys. DS1 went a bit quiet, DS2 shed a few tears. And that was it. I am sure more will come out in the next few days.
We are still waiting to hear what the cause was, so still in limbo a bit.
And I have sinusitis which is just adding insult to injury.

Ah Chev, I have just ventured back to MSE after years of not having a password, and was so pleased to read at the start of your diary that you were in NZ and full of excitement and optimism. It made me rather teary to see that things aren't currently working out as you planned, and particularly that you were also dealing with grief and shock.
Life sometimes does hit you with the full force of its horribleness, and it can seem like you are stuck in limbo, with no likelihood of things changing, but everything sorts itself out in the end.
I hope you can find an opportunity to sit down with your OH soon, and say 'Right, it's just the two of us now; can we talk calmly about the holiday and the timescale concerns I listed in the email I sent you'.
If he still won't discuss it, then I think that you and others are right about there being another underlying problem, whether it be that your relationship is going through a difficult patch, or fear on his part that you won't want to leave if you spend too long in the UK, or something else that he hasn't admitted.
I'm really very sorry about your niece.xxx

Hi Chevalier,
I found and read your diary with some interest, as my parents emigrated to NZ when I was quite young, so I got to grow up there. And believe me, they really didn't like British immigrants back then!! Having said that, I am really greatful that I had the opportunity to grow up there, as it was an amazing country and I made some great friends, so I imagine your kids will be equally thankful one day. The fact that I can now live in NZ or England I find a cheerful thought. I do know that Kiwis can be rather blunt and not very welcoming, but they do come around in time. I don't imagine that's much help at the moment though.
I am sorry about to hear about your niece - that is so sad. I sincerely hope that things work out for you in the long run X0 -

Hi all sorry i have been MIA. I have just posted this in the motoring section but if anyone has any ideas from here that would be great too.
Alternatively where can we get a 5 seater car for less than 2000 that will also do a run down to Alicante in Spain and back?
"We are coming in from overseas and want to hire a car. We also want to take it to France and Spain and this is the problem.
We went and got a quote from Six* which was fine, but then they wanted to charge us an additional surcharge of 60% of the total price to take it to Europe. This added pretty much 600 pounds onto the cost.
So my question is, is there a hire company (preferably near heathrow, but not a complete necessity), that DOESN'T charge such a high surcharge, or better still charges none at all?
Thanks in advance
