I'll probably use the J (6mm) hook as the pattern states, I have been using that size for some hats, it is a good size and things grow really quick. I have some vintage (don't you just love that word? So much more acceptable than old!) Jaeger mohair yarn in black mixed with bright blue. Not my ideal colour but it has been sitting in my cupboard for yonks and needs using to make room for more stuff.
I'll have to pop back out now to get a Woman's Weekly!0 -
I might have to look out for that magazine - never bought Woman's Weekly before! I'm making the curly scarf linked upthread and it's so easy, and it looks great.
Just wanted to show off my first stripy thing I ever made - a cardi for my friend's baby. It was so cute I could barely bring myself to give it away, but it won't fit me...

That cardi is gorgeous! I love the flowers on it.
I went to two shops and couldn't get a Woman's Weekly, have to go on a hunt tomorrow!
Update on the shrug-a-licious - I tried it in the mohair and decided I was big enough already without all the fluff making me look bigger, tried it in black aran weight which just didn't sit right. Gave it one last go in black DK and it is looking great so I think that is about the right weight to use. Still using the J hook.0 -
I've been following this thread and decided to take the plunge and join in
Yesterday i finished making a HUGE Granny square blanket for my blokey, it's five feet across! I tidied the ends in every twenty rows or so, that way i didn't have to do it all in one go! It has taken several months to complete though! I'll post a pic later if anyone wants to see it
I have also finished a three colour mile-a-minute afghan (smaller than normal as it's for a friend's small daughter) which just needs tidying, that was worked on a big hook in chunky yarn and only took about 5 days in total working on it in the evening
I am now working on another mile-a-minute afghan, in a lovely lilac aran on a 6mm hook, each strip will take about an evening in front of the telly, i'm hoping to finish it in time for Christmas as a gift for my neice
I love crochet, i was taught by my Grandma when i was smaller but didn't do any for years, then i took it up again so i could make some 70's style cloche hats for a Butlins weekender and that was it, i was "hooked"
I started of on hats, then shawls, then ponchos and now afghans/blankets and i am completely in love with mile-a-minute afghans. I had to buy the patterns from an American eBay seller though as they are very hard to get hold of here and there aren't many free patterns on the net for them either. Still, you've got to feed your habits haven't you
Don't even get me started on my yarn stash0 -
Hi Franney,
excuse my ignorance, but what is a mile-a-minute afghan?0 -
Hiya
Ummmm... how to explain...
Well, you crochet strips which are about 60" or so long and about 4" to 5" wide, and you either crochet or sew them together when they are all made, or you crochet them together as you work on the final round of each strip.
example1 and example2
By the time they are all joined together it doesn't look like strips and for someone with a low interest threshold (like me) it's perfect as you don't get 2 inches into an afghan and think "OH MY GOODNESS! I can't do another five feet of this!"
I've tried finding the pattern i first used but the website is down
Usually you do a chain of between 150-200 stitches, that then becomes the center of the strip, you work down one side, then back along the other edge of the foundation chain, then usually another 3 rounds (round the edges of that strip), if that makes any sense at all?!
Hope this helps!Chipps wrote:Hi Franney,

Thanks, those pictures look really good! I like the one with the flowers. I will try a google search of mile a minute afghan & see what I get.0

No worries, hope you have some luck, whenever i search very few patterns come back which is why i ended up buying some booklets!
Of course the only problem with American patterns is the yarn and finding an English equivalent *sigh*Chipps wrote:Thanks, those pictures look really good! I like the one with the flowers. I will try a google search of mile a minute afghan & see what I get.0 -
