Can anyone tell me why Primus is now being recommended as the cheapest? I have used Just Dial for a while now and can't see what difference it would make to me if I change. Just Dial still have free calls for up to 2 hours whereas with Primus it's 90 minutes, and the rate is 2p per minute with both of them for national and local calls. The site's recommendations have saved me a fortune on my telephone bills so I don't want to ignore any further savings I might be able to make, and at the moment I can't see any benefit from changing. But I'm always prepared to be corrected.........

Apparently Just Dial is no longer offering free E&W calls to new subscribers according to MSE Martin.

Thanks for that, I guess I need to read my weekly emails a little more closely!!! But the free evening & weekend calls are still available to those already using Just Dial?

Yes the free e&w 01/02 call offer continues for existing users for the moment. No knowing of what Talk Talk the new owners will start doing once they rebrand product.

  • In his article, Martin says: Discountdial, run by the same group as Call18866 and Call1899, has taken over as king of the calls to mobiles providers charging 1p/min at all times. There’s no need to sign up for an account. Dial 0844 861 6464 and follow the same procedure without the international dialling code.
I've just looked at their web site and couldn't find a reference anywhere to making calls to mobiles or an access code. I have just tried using the one Martin mentions in his article; I got through OK but didn't get a voice telling me the cost of the call so have no idea how much I was charged. Does anyone know what the state of play is?

The best bet would be 1899 for 01/02 calls, and 18185 for Mobile and Peak NGN calls.I am assuming you only work office hours.Quite a lot of sme use their services.

Do you have a contract with BT with a min call spend.Be careful you dont go lower then agreed spend, or they will apply penalties.

My daughter phoned 0800 036 0094 this morning to try to sign up for Primus Saver Option 2 (the no monthly fee, free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls CPS package).

She was directed to the uswitch website but, there, only the £2.99 Primus Saver Freetalk package is offered.

The Primus website still shows the Primus Saver Option 2 being available and their FAQ page states:
    Primus Saver Option 2

    • No monthly charge for this package.
    • Free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines*
    • Peak calls charged at 2p per minute.
    • Exceptionally low international rates
When she phoned again, the call went like this:
Apparently, I have to telephone after 12.00, as there are no sales representatives able to sell me anything until then. They do report heavy traffic re: option 2 – I know this because the guy asked me if I was ringing to sign up for option 2 before I said anything and then confirmed heavy numbers of applicants of late! Must be that Martin Lewis guy causing all this rumpus!
    Anyone know what's going on?

    Update 14:45 3/2/06:

My daughter successfully signed up to Primus Saver Option 2 on the phone.
Signed up by phone with no problems. I have advised Primus that the Uswitch website they redirected me to is not displaying Saver Option 2.
However, the question of why that option is not showing on the uswitch website has not been answered.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
