    Hi redmel,

I usually add tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, carrots, and red peppers to the to the mince, but you can add almost any veg that you want.

There's an older thread with lots of lasagne recipes that should help so I've added your thread to it.

Would love a nice easy recipe for lasagne (never made it before) that I can just take out of freezer to defrost on day and put in oven.

I bought an online tesco shop today and I thought that I would have a go at proper home made meals (to help bring down the food totals and fill the freezer and also cut out take aways)

Everything is tesco value apart from the mince and some of these things were already in the cupboard but I will guesstimate their value.

This is a huge lasagne which would serve 6 people (4 inch x 4 inch x 4 inch) or as my OH has a huge appetite is it likely that it will be 3 portions (8 x 4 x 4).

    Meat Sauce

500 g Quality Mince (my other half would not touch cheap meat because of the fat content) - £2.25 (was 2 for £4.50)
6 Mushrooms - 20p (which is about a 1/5 of the value mushroom box)
2 small onions -10p (from the huge £1 value onion bag)
2 cloves of garlic (already in the fridge) - 10p
Fresh basil - free (from my basil plant)
    2 tins of toms - 40p
    S & P - in cupboard
Dried mixed herbs - 1p (22p for the whole tub which lasts me months)
Splash of tabasco - (in my store cupboard)
Splash of lee and perrins (in my store cupboard)
Pinch of sugar (in my store cupboard)
    1/2 of tesco lasagne sheets - 16p

    White Sauce

    Value butter (1/5 of a block) - 15p
Flour (in the cupboard) - 5p
Value skimmed UHT Milk - 10p
    S&P
(no cheese in it as OH hates cheese but if I was making for me - a veggie - it would have loads of cheese and veggie mince which would be a lot cheaper).

    Total £3.53

Which is just under 59p a portion (and a good sized portion at that) and could be made even cheaper which cutting down on the quality of the mince and even using things to bulk it out.

I am so chuffed as some of the tomato sauce will be used to top my home made scone based pizza (I cooked the meat seperatety) and that will go in the oven while it is on. I am tempted to make extra scoone mix and make garlic balls to go with the lasagne so I get my 6 portions out of it.

I am going OS for the same reasons as you. I started about 6 weeks ago so am also an OS newbie. One thing I have yet to try is making a lasagne. Bought some lasagne sheets the other day - just need to pluck up the courage but your recipe sounds like just what I need (apart from I will use veggie mince).

How did you do it - did you just use a layer of sauce, a layer of pasta, a layer of sauce, a layer of pasta and then white sauce and put in the oven?
    Thanks

I put a layer of meat sauce then lasagne sheets then white sauce (repeat again) - the top layer should be white sauce which you could top with cheese (yummy) or a mixture of cheese and bread crumbs if you like a really crispy topping (and you have stale bread to use - I tend to make crumbs and freeze them so I can use them as and when).

If you want a veggie one then you can make it with roast veggies (home made - peppers, onions, mushrooms and garlic are lovely).

Whoops - forgot the cooking instructions - dont bother to pre heat the oven just bung it in at 200 degrees and it takes about 30 mins (keep an eye on the topping so that it doesnt burn - you can tell when it is done as the sauce will bubble up around the edges.

That's fab, i make a huge lasagne on a monthly basis and freeze....I've just made a chilli which will prob do me and dh 2 meals each. I used....

1/2 a pack of sainsburys basic mince (which is really nice) 44p
    2 m/rooms - 21p (bought 2 loose in tesco earlier)
1 onion - 15p (also bought loose in tesoc earlier)
    garlic (in cupboard)
    1 tinned toms -21p
1 sainsburys toms with oregano -47p
    1/2 tube of tom puree - 12p
    1 veg stock cube - 7p
sprinkle of chilli powder - 1p

Rice to go with both meals (apx 1/4 a bag) - 24p

Total - £1.92....which if ive worked out right is apx 48p per portion.

    Happy cooking everyone.xx

I do my lasagne this way, but I start off with a layer of lasagne sheets at the bottom. This means that the finished dish has a 'bottom' to it and it's the only way I can manage to dish up a portion of lasagne that stays as a portion and doesn't collapse in a heap on the plate. Not that it matters, it still tastes as good.
