I disagree. Although its tmpting to see things in black or white they almost never are.

When I was an employer it was important to me that peoples SKILLS were good, that isn't always reflected by qualifications, especially the ones now that you can take over and over again till you get it right: I needed people who got it right on the first go most of the time. When you work with people closely its not important to me that I like them enough to want to be close friends with them, in fact the opposite, but it is important you can trust them and spend time with them without wanting to rip your own ears off. :o How the person interacts with me is important not because I'm judging them, but because I'm judging how we would work together.

I'm weird because I quite enjoy interviews, sure I get very nervous and jumpy, but I'm that kind of person, once I'm actually in here I relax and have fun, I genuinely see the oppertunty as a way to evaluate the people who might/will want to emply me and see how they cope with being i a powerful position, a tence atmosphere and whether I think they would make good employers (in a small company) or a good environment, in a larger one.

Maybe in the public sector they are a lot stricter on you meeting the spec than private sector companies.

  • My first job was public sector, at management level they seem tough but they know people can be thin on the ground. I got in simply because I had an A level in Govt & Politics, no other experience.

Phil, I've just got myself an interview next week with a local company, and if I look at the job spec I haven't done half the things they want. However what they asked for was someone who shows willingness to try and a commitment to get on with the job, whatever it takes. They were given a tight shortlist by the agency and took three people from it, of which I was one - if they wanted someone 100% suited to the job I wouldn't be getting a look-in.

If I can do it you can ;)

    Good work! Keep it up!

I seem to remember my interviewer used the word "pants" in mine (job that I'm in now), but that's the kind of wording he uses so not all managers use the queen's english ;)

Actually I think he used it twice:
"Sorry about this laptop, it's a bit pants I know" and
"Damn! You answered my question before I got to ask it again! I'm down to my pants now!"

It was a pretty funny interview actually. Those are the best ones, as you relax and build up a rapport. As soon as the interviewer uses a particular brand of humour I tend to accept it as a cue to use the same to a certain extent. A bit of "common sense" on what's appropriate is required of course!

It must just be my lack of job experience that stops me getting jobs then.

Possibly, but you need to apply for lots of jobs.....as a guide, think of 1 in 10 chance of an interview, 4 in a 100 chance of a job offer. The higher your number of applications, the higher those interview & offer numbers will go...250 applications = 25 interviews, 4 or 5 job offers.....:)

Yes, but not a very good one as it was rushed.

Phil, you are a superstar, I'm well impressed (did I just say well impressed?!)!

    Really positive start ...

So what are you going to do today? Remember it doesn't always have to be job related, just something constructive. ;)
    Gone ... or have I?
