Insurance2go only insures up to £400!

I'm still deciding what to do. Don't want to add it to my home insurance and be penalised at renewal time if I need to claim.

jicms, have you checked your home insurance to make sure it DOESN'T cover the phone already? If you have the "away from home" cover, you may be insured whether you like it or not. If that's the case, you would have dual insurance if you took out a specific policy and a claim would be registered against your home insurance whether you liked it or not.

Regulation allows insurers to club together to pay for a claim when there is more than one insurer or policy covering the same event. You still only get one payout (so there's no fraud) but the insurers all contribute their proportion of the costs.

In addition, have you considered whether there would be anything else to claim for in the event of an incident? If you are mugged, you've got watches, jewellery, money, damaged clothes and the phone to claim for. On holiday, you have your whole hand luggage, the mugging risk or the contents of your hotel room. The only time you are likely to claim solely for the phone is in the event of it dropping out of your pocket.

For some, phone insurance is the only option because they are not in a position to need home insurance. Under those circumstances, you need to look closely at the cover provided, terms and exclusions. Most will exclude "unattended loss or theft" so you need to take that into accout.

  • By the way: iphoneinsurance.org.uk are an appointed representative of a firm who resell insurance for a broker that uses a subsidiary of Fortis Insurance. Do you really want that many people between you and your insurer? Who do you blame if something goes wrong?

Insurance4gadgets are a different appointed representative of a firm who resell insurance for a broker that uses a subsidiary of Fortis Insurance.

I've looked at the KeyFacts document for the policy and noticed that their admin fee for cancelling the policy is 25% of the annual premium. Their declaration about the Financial Services Compensation Scheme is also out of date (the limits changed at the beginning of the year). If they can't get something as simple as that correct, I don't hold out much hope for the policy that provides the cover.

I'm pretty sure that most mobile phone insurance policies will have the same issue, but if anyone wants me to have a look at a specific policy and rip it to bits, please let me know.

    hi guys,

I have just brought an iphone 4 (16gb so £500 cover ok) and LV insurance say its an extra £35 with my £100 excess to have away from cover added.

I have had a look at gadget insurance from insureandgo for the patinum at £42.62 and it seems a perfect buy?

Can anyone recommend this? have searched everywhere and it seems the company is ok. The cover looks good?

No I would have to extend my home insurance to accidental damage and include valuables away from home.

As far as I am aware any claim on my phone insurance wouldn't affect my renewal premiums? I imagine it's similar to travel insurance when they check if you've made duplicate claims.

In addition, have you considered whether there would be anything else to claim for in the event of an incident? I still think my phone is far more vulnerable than any other possessions as far as theft, loss and dropping! It's one of the few things I take everywhere and leave out of my bag. I'm nearly always abroad if I'm in a hotel room so travel insurance would kick in for other possessions.

I took the plunge and took out insurance2go, £49 after £5 cashback. Hopefully it's as good as any, as none seem foolproof! Might seem strange but I do like to keep my home insurance separate from my phone and have never yet claimed on it.
  • I have a new iphone, what is the best way to insure it?

It would of been quicker and much more helpful than posting what you did though. No need to take it out on new users.

newaccount, if you have a look through this forum, you will find people asking the same question. The general gist of it is to check if it is covered under your contents insurance, if not, add it, and ask your insurer about away from home cover.

Does anyone have any experience of the company below please?

Covers other gadgets besides mobile phones but I am interested in the phone insurance and would appreciate your views.

    Thanks
