  • Hi,

Have recently got a Samsung Galaxy S handset upgrade through phones4u. As I got it through phones4u, Orange told me their orange car insurance was no longer valid so have cancelled it. As a result I'm loking for a new insurer.
I bank with Natwest and see they do account plus stuff for 6.99 a month. Has anyone used them for mobile phone insurance?

    Thanks

I just cancelled my Orange Care insurance for an iphone 3g (was £12 PM) and switched to insurance2go, at £5.99PM, 3 months free, and also cashback on quidco (is that what it's called?) Definitely worth it, if I break my phone in the first 3 months I'm still saving little but some money :D
  • My biggest fear was theft and water damage also I didn't want my home insurance premium to rise for a phone.

I take your point, but there are three things you need to think about:

    1. With theft, would you be claiming for anything else?
The number of cases where someone loses their phone only are small in comparison to those where the whole handbag/briefcase is taken.

    2. Dual insurance means a home claim anyway
If you have a specific mobile insurance AND away from home cover, you are "dual insured"; you have two insurers that cover the same item. You would only claim off the phone insurer, but once they have settled your claim they would contact your home insurers. This is for 2 reasons: to make sure you have not claimed twice (that's fraud) and to ask them to pay a proportion of the loss. As a result, you end up with a claim in your home insurance history anyway.

    3. Declare any claim
You are required to declare ANY event that COULD have resulted in a claim when you buy or renew home insurance. As home insurance with the correct section would cover the claim, you would have to declare the loss.

In other words, mobile phone insurance is still a con.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

I didn't think I will be claiming with other items, because my fear was being mugged or pickpocketed. My phone is not on the home insurance so it won't be a dual claim will it?

You have to declare ANY incident that COULD give rise to a claim, regardless of whether you intend to claim or not. The key is not whether the claim is covered or not, but whether it COULD be covered.

I was not aware of this.

Although home insurance is still in my mom's name so not a true factor to me, I am surprised they can ask the home insurance company for money! I don't get how you can pay company x to insurance an item, and they go and chase someone else for payment, when the point was to avoid excesses from home insurance and keeping a no claim bonus.

  • I am going to get the I phone 4 when they've sorted out the reception issues and have been reading through all these posts and also getting advice from mates.

Previously I have insured with Orange for £5/ month but this will increase to £12 when I switch to an I phone which I am thinking is a bit steep considering I have to pay for the handset too. Personally I have always had good experiences with making a claim through Orange insurance (I got my phone snatched and also phone broke and was replaced within 48 hours both ocassions).

I am wanting to go with an insurance policy that covers as much as possible (accidental damage, theft (not through force), water damage, fraudulant calls, international) as well as getting me a replacement asap.

One website looks good but surely there is a catch?
    iphoneinsurance.org.uk
It's got iPhone 4 Insurance Loss Cover for £5.99

Perhaps now with the influx of so many 'smart phones' this area of insurance is getting more competitive?

If any one else can advise on better/cheaper comprehensive I phone 4 insurance let me know!

    Thanks

Some only insure up to £500 (the iPhone 4 £32GB is £599), some don't insure loss

Insurance2go only insures up to £400!

I'm still deciding what to do. Don't want to add it to my home insurance and be penalised at renewal time if I need to claim.
