Lemon_Drop wrote: »Hi again,
I'm thinking of trying to have a kind of back-up diet that I can turn to when I need to so that I don't go off the rails when I need to stop. I'm running into a problem here as my cold has turned into a nasty cough/ sore throat. At the moment I'm trying to stay at around 25g of carb (not including fibre) per day. Yesterday's chicken soup was 18g:eek: . I'm also taking cough mixture (about 5g/dose 1 or 2 times a day, and I just allowed myself one soother (another 5g). I'm sticking with it at the moment, probably slighly over as I refuse to alter my veg portions to compensate, but I do find it really tough at times like these when I'm feeling a little under the weather - omlettes and chicken legs are not the most appealing when feeling a little sick!
I'm just in the pre planning stage, at the moment, but from reading other posts, I might try calorie counting. 1200 seems to be a good number but I'm completely new to this so would appreciate some guidence. I would like to include porridge (I miss this sooooooo much) and fruit. I think I will still stick with meat & veg (low carb) for evening meal, and I don't want to involve bread (my biggest weakness), I'll probably stick with ryvitas. Someone posted a link for a calorie counter not too long ago (so sorry, can't remember who) but if someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. I'm really just thinking aloud at the moment but any input would be nice. Just want to allow myself a little of my comfort foods (porridge and chicken soup) when I'm ill without me going overboard. Not sure how it would work with the water retention thing, I think I'll just have to prepare for an initial 4 or 5lb gain, after all, it shouldn't really count as a loss in the first place.
I will go away and think on this one.
:naughty: Tut tut tut Lemon, you shouldn't be skimping on the meds if you're sick. Have a big bowl of porridge if it will make you feel better (and you'll certainly feel stronger for it) having a couple of days treating yourself when you're feeling ickky won't hurt.Debt Free as of 17/01/2009 Turtle Power!!

Lord. He puts me off my dinner. Im sure hes a nice bloke, and the money would be amazing, but how could you lie there and enjoy taking it from him? yuck.
No doubt she thinks about what she's going to spend his money on the next day - it's amazing how shopping can take your mind off less savoury activities - bit like prostitution really  .

Hi Lemon Drop - you may need more than 1200 calories a day, it all depends on your current weight and level of activity. There's a link in Sugg's opening post to websites where you can find out what your BMR (basic metabolic rate) is, which tells you how many calories you use on a daily basis. Reducing this amount by 500 calories a day 'should' result in a 1lb a week loss. Here's the link. I use calorie-count.com to record my daily calories, and I think there's a calorie calculator there too.

Hi Lemon Drop, sorry that you're still a bit under the weather. I tend to agree with Raph, get yourself better first and then worry about the weight loss.
For starting off calorie counting your best bet is to work out your BMR (if you don't know it already), multiply by either 1.2, 1.375, 1.55 or 1.725 according to your activity levels, and then reduce accordingly to get a diet pace (e.g. 500 fewer calories per day for 1lb loss a week)
Link here explains the process http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/
1200 is very low - it's the minimum healthy calorie intake for a female - and may be TOO low for some people
I'd recommend the A-Z of Calories, £2.40, you only need to buy it once and it's a lot more convenient than going on the web to look everything upOr if you want me to look anything up just yell, that goes for anyone else on here too.
You do have to be careful that you're getting a well balanced diet, but you seem very sensible there anyway
If you need any help working out the numbers or if there are any questions, ask away... there are lots of us calorie counter peeps on here!0 -
PLG - thanks for the link to the breakfast information, I was particularly interested to read:Over several months, obese women who ate half their daily calories first thing fared better than those eating a much smaller amount.
which follows the 'breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dine like a pauper' theory.
It sounds great, but I would really struggle to eat that much first thing in the morning. I'm not one of these people who can't eat breakfast at all, in fact I always wake up hungry, but I can't imagine tucking into a 610 calorie meal before going to work! The one time I do usually manage a big breakfast is when I'm on holiday, when I'm probably eating later and have more time, and I often eat enough so that I don't need lunch.

Lemon Drop, (by the way - I love your name) while you're ill you should look after yourself - my Dad always used to say 'feed a cold, starve a fever' and that's what I've always done with a cold. Never had a fever so can't comment.
When I was losing weight and dropping 1-2lb per week I was averaging 1400 calories per day (roughly).
I usually have 2 portions of porridge a day, in the morning made with milk and in the evening with water - I love the different tastes. Could not survive without my oats, I also eat Twinks Hobnobs, Anzac Cookies or Flapjacks during the day too.
Beanielou, after Christmas and the little monkeys' birthdays I had a bag of funsize chocolate bars left over. I stashed them away for my own daily 'treat' and had 1 a day. Mini crunchies are 80 cals, mini fingers of fudge are 60 cals, mini curly wurlys are 65 cals, mini caramels are 85 cals - so no need to 'deprive' yourself of these goodies - just make sure you stop at 1.

50% of daily calories at breakfast is too much for me too
The study I was reading about says less than 11% of daily cals at breakfast promotes weight gain - they recommend at least 22% (and up to 50%).
Sometimes I'm under 22% if I have just cereal and my yoghurt drink. I might try making sure it's not under 22% for the whole of next week as an experiment, anyone want to join me?0 -

Even the full size curly wurly is only 115 cals Beanie!
I'm on a strict 1200 cal day today and I only had to have a slightly lighter lunch to be able to give myself that lovely treat
