  • Hi,

new to this so forgive me if it has already been answered.

I previously have had BIG charges from a SMILE account (c/c and account) and a HSBC account (c/c and account) but naive as i was four years ago i simply got a debt consolidation loan and paid it all off that way.

Now hearing that you can reclaim bank charges obviously perked up my ears BUT i no longer have the account details and i now currently bank with HALIFAX - is there a way to get previous bank details?

    Kind regards

Send a subject access request to the bank and give as much details as possible, ie date of birth, post code, approximate date of closure, branch details if you knew them.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

  • Hi all, please forgive my ignorance if this sounds like a stupid question. Over the years, my bank has taken ridiculous amounts of charges from my disability money which used to get paid weekly. I had a debit card (never a credit card) and I'd put (for example) a £5.00 top up on my phone using my debit card. The bank would then write me 2/3 weeks later claiming that 'although there were insufficient funds available, they've allowed the payment ' but they'd charge me £25 for each £5 debit!! Over one xmas period of 3 weeks I got 3 such charges, £75, plus interest charged at a high rate, then this would invariably put me way beyond my authorised overdraft limit and further charges would be heaped upon the already inflated charges. It was getting to a point they were taking well over a £125 a month in charges and I ended up arranging for my money to go into a new basic account with a different bank. The old bank keep sending threatening letters and referred me to a debt collection agency so my credit rating is probably stuffed. However, can I still apply for my charges to be refunded (they total around £7,000-12,000 over the past ten years- most occurring between 2001-2007). I think I may be able to apply under hardship as I'm disabled with a lifelong and incurable disability but since the bank are hounding me for their pound of flesh and it all being on hold I'm not sure if I have a leg to stand on? Thanks in advance everyone/anyone for any help/advice. Cat

Is it interest for using the overdraft or are you exceeding the overdraft?

I am not entirely sure, looking at my statements there are 2 different charges as A & L changed there charges part way through the period I am trying to claim for.

Their definition of charges are as follows:
    Authorised overdraft fee = £5
Unauthorised overdraft fee = £25 on day 2 and £25 on day 5 (capped at £50 per calander month)
these were the charges stated on statements from 2005

My recent statements now show new fees of 50p per day for capped at 10 days per month for overdraft usage fee and then £5 per day capped at 20 days for unauthorised overdraft usage.

Looking through my statements all of the overdraft fees show as monthly OD fees so am completely unsure of what to claim for. There are additional interest charges each month, I have left these out of my summary of claim as I know I cant claim for this

Additionallly, am I assuming right that I can claim for Payment review fees?, these are combination of item paid fees and dd returned fees but some months the bank have charged me £200+ in charges!

Hello guys, I admire the work you're doing here. Hope I'm not posting in the wrong place but I have a question:

What is likely to happen if I claim back bank charges from Barclays when I have a personal loan with them (still about £3000 left to pay)?

Is it likely they'll close my account?
If so, what would happen to the loan? Do you think I'd be able to continue paying the same monthly amount as I do now?

I do have another current account already, which I will be using as my "parachute account" should anything bad happen.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
    To pay: Loan (£4075). Overdraft #1 (£550). Overdraft #2 (£242).
To do: Close savings account. Claim back bank charges. Reduce electricity payments. Reduce cost (& length!) of home phone calls.

If so, what would happen to the loan? They can't call in the loan just because your claiming on the bank a/c. It's governed by acoompletely different agreement

Do you think I'd be able to continue paying the same monthly amount as I do now?

Yes, again I'm assuming the loan is not in arrears.

    Thank you!

No it's not in arrears, and yes, my Barclays current account is the one the loan payment comes out of every month.

So there's no way they can close my current account and demand that I pay the loan from somewhere else?

Fantastic! Thanks so much for your help.
