Advice on Potty training

I found straight to knickers best with all mine. They didn't tell me when they needed to wee in pull ups, but would in knickers. I found pullups don't lock the wetness away aswell as a nappy so they ended up with a red bum. Also found pullups to come up bigger in size than nappies, especially pamper pull ups.0

If you think she's not ready for pants yet, you are probably right. When they are ready for toilet training it happens quickly, as pigpen describes. When they aren't ready though, it's a long hard slog with tears on all sides and lots of ruined clothes and carpets!
As she seems to be requesting pull ups though, I'd start her off on these. We always used the same size in pull ups as we had in nappies, but if the first size you try is a bit big, you could always go down a size. You'll probably end up using the bigger size anyway as night time nappies even if she gets the hang of things quickly. If she had a red bum today she might be allergic to the brand of nappies they used at nursery. My DD had a behind like a baboon in Huggies pull ups but was fine in pampers, and my DS who isn't at the pull up stage yet, gets a red bum in pampers active fit but not in other pampers nappies.
When you get to the point where you want her to know she is wet, there are a couple of options. You can put a normal pair of pants on under a pull up, or you can buy waterproof training pants from places like mother care. Or you can just use normal pants and tolerate a little mess for a while!0 -
If she is going to nursery then I think pullups are a good idea to start with, and try and let her run about in 'big girl pants' when at home.
My Daughter wore pullups when we went out when she was still having accidents, we just got the ones that were the same size as the nappies she was in before
Tesco easy fit pull up pants are much cheaper than the big name brands, but work just as well imoLearn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. :cheesy:0 -
There are two types of pull up, one is designed to be just as absorbent as abnormal nappy, so they shouldn't leak. The other is intended to be less absorbent so that children notice they're wet and are encouraged to use the toilet, but will absorb little accidents.0

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll go back and thank you all in a min. Will see how she is tomorrow as she's got a couple of little friends coming round so may be a bit chaotic to try the potty unless she asks for it! Yes, I do think knickers aren't my favourite option right now just from the messy nappy point of view, they're really unpleasant and far from firm and it must be the teething! We have a chair type potty and a normal potty (which she's sat on before but then immediately got up and said 'no like it'). I'm definately not going to push her, after all, she has to be ready, but didn't want to discourage her if she is wanting to start and so other folks experiences are great, many thanks for taking the trouble to reply. x0

With my son, I put him in pants and let him we and poo himself - and it was a long hard slog which I don't want to go through again.
My daughter is two and I currently have her in pull-ups. I asked for advice at her nursery and they said they don't recommend just putting them in pants and letting them wet themselves because they can find it very upsetting. So I'm going for the more "gentle" approach - if she goes in the potty then I give her a lot of praise, but I don't berate her if she goes in the nappy.
I'm in no hurry.0 -
With my DD who is 3 we tried pull ups and knickers to no avail at first and this was when she was about 2 and a half, but she eventually refused to wear nappies or pull ups and we went to being dry day and night very quickly. We had a few accidents with no 2's but didn't make a big thing about it. She does insist now though on doing no 2's in her potty even if its in the bathroom .0

I tried pull up's with my eldest, but he just called them "wee pants" and wee'd in them without making any effort!
I used normal pants with him and the same with the other two and found it easier. I also trained them straight on the toilet rather than using a potty to save having to go through the potty to toilet phase later.
I did use pull up's occasionally for things like long car journeys when we may not have been able to find a toilet quickly, but in the house I found it easier with cloth pants. Here I go again on my own....0 -
The next size down is 4+. I second using Tescos. They're very good quality. Pull-ups can be a bit roomier than regular nappies.0

Thanks again everyone, so many different experiences! Just to report that she was happy to have her nappy on this morning, asked once for the potty but sat there for a few seconds before getting upset...I was sitting next to her and holding her hand and giving quiet encouragement but she quickly got up and wanted her nappy back on. Perhaps its a little too soon for her? Maybe it's a peer thing and at nursery sees the other children doing it so wants to do it there too? Not sure, but I'm jotting down your helpful suggestions so I'll have some options to try! xx0
