When there was a crash in Japan, not so long ago, the must have present for Xmas, was a safe.
If you put your money in the bank the bank charged serious money for looking after it.0 -
Here's a breakdown of the last crash by area:

Why don't you review much more detailed figures here.
http://www.hbosplc.com/economy/inclu...TownsData3.xlsThese clearly show that property prices fell in ALL regions, contrary to IveSeenTheLight's claims; although he is correct in that Scotland saw the least of the falls (although one suspects that that is because they saw few of the rises preceding the falls either, unlike this time...).
I never said that ALL regions did not see a drop, I have clearly pointed out that areas did drop and return.
Again look at http://www.hbosplc.com/economy/inclu...TownsData3.xls for detailed analysis
The reason for the difference in figures from IveSeenTheLight's is clear; he randomly picks the dates 1989 and 1996 as his frame of reference, when as the above articles make clear, different regions peaked and bottomed out at different times.
No random dates here. I chose the dates from which is widely reported as being the UK average top and bottom.
I point this out as if you look at http://www.hbosplc.com/economy/inclu...TownsData3.xls it shows detailed analysis of the last 20 YEARS of the regional variances and not only between 1989 - 1996 as you say I randomly selected. Many areas fell by c. 30% - I personally expect greater nominal falls this time, as wage inflation is lower and so prices will have to fall further to hit long term averages of affordability.
I'm sure they did, I do not dispute this.
Care to say which areas.
I generally look specifically at my own area of concern, but when there are people on here such as yourself who claims that what happens in some areas must gappen across the whole of the UK, I simply ask them to refer to look at the data for themselves

My favourite was nollag2006, who was streets ahead of the other bulls in brashness and bullishness.

Specially liked this one:
"HSBC have already increased their expected house price growth estimate for 2008. Far from a crash coming, house price growth seems to be stabilising in the 5 - 10% range.
As another poster pointed out, what I love about these HPC muppets, who have been peddling their "the sky is falling" message now for 10 years is that even on the very front page of the HPC website all the indicators point to further house price growth, but yet they refuse to acknowledge this ..."
Would nollag2006 like to come out and back that up today?0 -

I bought my house in 1989 for £149,995.
In 1993 it was worth £95,000
Looks like about 30% to me.
That was in a large town in West Sussex.0 -

I don't dis-agree
Would you believe this falls in the London and South East area?
Name the town and we can look it up on http://www.hbosplc.com/economy/inclu...TownsData3.xls for factual data of the average house prices for that town.:wall:

I get an error message on that link?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Thanks, that one works....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
