Is it a standard practice to be able to take pd from a current pair of specs then?

I'm so happy this reglazing issue can solved more cheaply. I'm off to my opticians tomorrow for my prescription as I now need varifocals.

Yeah it's fairly easy to take a pd measurement from old glasses and i've been known to do that myself to double check my pd measurement sometimes. Had to do it today when i had a man with a pd of 76! didn't want to get my bum kicked when that job came in with mental thickness at the sides because i'd measured pd wrong. (and for all the optical peeps the centration was out by about 4mm but customer was dead set on this frame and nothing would shake him, not even the prospect of having milkbottle lenses).

My wife had some varifocal sunglasses reglazed bu Ciliary Blue this summer. They took all the measurements from the old lenses and did a superb job at about 30% cheaper than even the cheapest High St opticians.

Just had two pairs of glasses reglazed by Ciliary Blue. Couldn't be more impressed with the service. Everything moved as fast as it conceivably could have done. Emails kept me in touch. End result seems perfect, and the glasses seem to have been cleaned up and tightened too. Highly recommended. Won't hesitate to use them again.

I have had an experience with one of the online retailers for re-glazing and wanted to share. Last week I was going to write, prematurely, about the fab service and price I had been offered, but unfortunately this has not turned out to be the case...

I have a new prescription and wanted to get my glasses reglazed, and was recommended this site by my colleague who has ordered specs from them twice now:https://www.glassesdirect.co.uk. Glassesdirect were offering a good price for thin lenses and coatings, which I thought was really good in comparison to the the price of 170 quoted in D&A. I hadn't looked on this forum for advice - silly i know.

I received the reglazing package v.promptly and when I finally found my prescription a week ago, I got an email through about their 50% off lenses promotion. I contacted them via online chat to check the prices, as they were very low in comparison to other online retailers and I didn't believe they were right. They said that the 50% offer was off reglazing too and asked me to make a note in the order form of the amended price. So I did, which was £27.50 for the Gold package (thin 1.60 index lenses, UV400, Anti-reflect, and Anti-scratch coating). I sent them off on Thursday- they'd enclosed a posting label for recorded delivery in the pack too.

Today I got a phone call to inform me that the price was in fact different. That the total would be £52.50, as they needed to charge a re-glazing charge of £25. I asked the lady why, as this had not been mentioned on the order form I filled out, via email or the online chat function I used to enquire about pricing; she said that it is usually built into the the main price but as I was getting 50% off that there would be a £25 extra reglaze charge to the the 50% off. On the form the package I was going for was listed as £80 to be fair, though I had asked which prices applied and the lady said over online chat on their site that they have different promotions/price changes all the time so it was best to note down the price for the promotion listed in the email on the order form. I would have thought it extremely fair to offer 50% off the order form price too, but instead they were adamant that there should be a reglaze charge of £25. They then told me the standard reglaze lense price is £25 and then the package price is on top of that, though if you looked at their pricing (http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk/glasses-reglaze/) i don't think anyone would see that...?!

If they had said, sorry that offer is not right the actual charge is £52.50, I would have said, thats still a great price, please re-glaze my glasses, but the lady I spoke with just apologised for the re-glaze charge not being mentioned beforehand and told me it still applied. I asked to speak to her team leader just to talk it over with her, as they are an online company they should make their pricing completely clear, especially standard charges, before a customer sends their glasses off. Calling a customer and adding a reglaze charge, which is not mentioned on the form or website is not professional.

It felt like I didn't have a choice, but I just did not like the way they had gone about their pricing and I told the lady that I was not happy, but what could I do it was too late and they already had my glasses. The team manager apologised again and offered to send my glasses back to me, I appreciated the offer and accepted.

I must say that both customer service rep and team manager were ready to listen, polite and understood that I was not happy. Though as can be seen from the email and online info there is no mention of a standard charge.

So sorry for the Long post, I just wanted to highlight that everyone should be careful of online reglazing if the order is done with order forms, double check the prices via email or telephone first before sending your glasses off.

I just hope I get mine back ok now - oh and my prescription! Will then look at the the options recommended in this thread.

Update: Received my Specs back with my prescription and have placed an order with ciliaryblue. Thanks to everyone for the recs, feedback posts, and the 10% off code, which still works.

Ciliary blue have just (Monday) emailed to say that my glasses have been re-glazed and posted back, I sent them off on Friday, very quick! Great service!

I received my specs a couple of days later via Recorded delivery, they are perfect! I paid £40.50 in total, huge saving compared to highstreet store. Thanks, again, to all that gave feedback here.

I feel for you Pokka. I've just bought my second pair of lenses reglaze from 'Eyewear Glasses.co.uk' and I've come up trumps again, saved a fortune. Online Glasses Direct seem to be the only glasses retailer on the web who specialise in the actual lenses and I always see much better through thier varifocals than that of the ones I used to get from specsavers. In fact Specsavers quoted me £179 for a pair of Varilux Comfort lenses where as I bought these from OGD for £89!! Just goes to show the mark up on these things.

I had a look at different reglazing options. Has anyone come across GlassesExperts?

They currently offer:

Frame : Reglaze your own full rimmed frames £25.00

Coatings : Anti-reflective, Scratch resistant and UV400
protective coatings FREE

Water repellent coating would cost £5 extra. The other coatings are FREE until 11th July.

I can't see any matching offer by ciliaryblue that includes all three/four coatings for a similar price.

I've had their MAR/UC lenses that are what you're looking for, they cost £30, but they send all the packaging to you to send the frames back, this is pre-paid and addressed to make it really easy. I've use ciliaryblue so many times, I know their system inside out.
