my washing machine mender chappie said that mould and nasty stuff appears on the rubber if you use low temp washes. the water isnt hot enough to kill the nasty things that make the mould grow.

he reckoned that 30 degree washes are the bane of any washing machine. so maybe a hot wash with a biological powder may help????

Mine started doing that as well - what really helped was using a bit of kitchen towel to wipe round the rubber at the end of the wash - you need to pull the rubber (at the bottom) towards you to expose the drainage holes - there's always about 2 towels' worth of water lurking there. You could also give it a quick wipe with vinegar (and then wipe again with damp (water only) cloth.

  • I found the below method for cleaning washing machine brill and I do it once a month.

Using the hottest longest setting (mines 90c 2.5hrs) place a cap of bleach and a cap/scoop of washing liquid/powerd in the draw and wash on empty. When this cycle finishes place a cup of white vinegar directly into drum and again wash empty on the hottest longest cycle. When finish leave the door open to let air dry machine.

    Hope this is helpful.

there was a thing on watchdog about this. It is the bacteria build up by not doing a hot wash often enough. My machine does a boil wash every so many washes but some machines do not even have a hot wash programme any more and there are a lot of people saying they have the same problem as you. Watchdog said that peoples washing was coming out dirtier than when it went in. A hot wash may not clear it but should stop it getting worse.

So, wise ones, how do I shift the black gunck that's lurking on the top of the drawer cavity? I've tried scrubbing it with a dishwashing brush, it won't shift :(

Hi Raska, I used a spray bottle with bleach in it diluted and sprayed into the upper area of drawer unit. Do weekly. Please protect your eyes. Also used coctail stick to clear the small holes that get gunked up.

As well as the above leave the door open if poss to allow the rubber to dry properly. Same with the drawer!

  • Has anyone else ever had black mould growing in the seal on your washing machine? I've tried scrubbing it off with hot water and have done an empty boil wash, but no joy. I haven't tried any products on it yet, as I'm worried it may damage the seal. Do you have a tip on cleaning it?
