Hello everyone! I haven't been on here for just over three weeks (no intention of catching up with all the posts!), and I've finally had some sleep, so I thought I'd let you know that baby Irwin arrived 12 days late on May 12th by emergency caesarean. He's doing well, and breastfeeding is going well :money: , but reusable nappies haven't started yet :o , but I should get that up and running in the next couple of days. However, spending diaries and grocery challenge have fallen by the wayside. I'm getting back on my feet now, so will bring the spending diaries back in and come in here regularly again. No idea what we spent in May, but yet again I'm going to aim for £250. I missed you all!

Congratulations:j fantastic news. Hope all continues to go well. Huge hugs

I have stopped buying shop bread after finding a fantastic receipe, that involves no kneading, so easy dd1 can even help with it. So far made loaf everyday (we eat alot of bread) worked out costs approx 20p a loaf depending on how cheap you can get flour etc. And my dd1 even eats the crusts-it must be a miracle :-)
    Makes a 1lb loaf
    225g plain flour
    225g wholemeal strong flour
    1tsp baking powder
    1tsp cream of tartar
    1tbsp golden syrup
    1/4 pint milk
    2/4 pint boiling water
(receipe says also 1tsp of salt and 1tsp of vinegar but I don't use and seems to make no difference?)

    1. mix dry ingredients-make well in centre
    2. pour milk into jug and add kettle boiling water, add golden syrup
    3. pour liquid into dry ingredients and mix with metal spoon
    4. pour mix into 1lb loaf tin
    5. put in oven 190 for 30mins

    yummy :0)

Hi everyone, I havn't been on here for a while, but need to get myself sorted again (I can sooo tell I havn't been watching the pennies)...My finances are pretty dire at the moment....

Can I join in for the rest of the month? I will start from today and say my budget till 30th June will be £150 for everything including booze, toiletries and nappies...I have a good stock of nappies (have twins) and toiletries and mil has been round today with some wine so won't need to get any in for tomorrow (having a barbecue, just for the 5 of us and mil) so thats good...

Anyway hope you all have a thrifty day ;)

I agree with you here, not that I actually water down the milk. But it struck me at work, watching people put skimmed milk in their tea, that they seem to put twice as much in it as they would if they used full fat milk, which seemed to me rather to defeat the object! So it MUST be cheaper to buy full fat milk and use less of it than to buy semi skimmed or skimmed.

Fresh milk at the moment is on 2 for £2 which works out at 44p/litre
When the offer ends (15th June) The price will be 63p/litre

Skimmed UHT Milk is 49p/Litre (44p @ netto)

So at the moment they're both the same but after the offer finishes UHT will be cheaper.

I always use value UHT skimmed milk because it's cheap, you never need to pop to the shops for milk as you can buy enough without worrying it will go off and you dont have to use valuable freezer space to store it ;)

And I dont add loads to my tea to make up for it not being Whole/SS. I like the taste of skimmed :)

I buy fresh whole milk for my DS(20months) though as he needs the fat and he always goes through 10 pints a week!! When he's 2 I'll switch him to Semi-Skimmed and when he's 5 he'll have the same as us.

Hi Mrs M - What is it with Men:confused: ? Gawd bless 'em they do like to be involved eh!, he he, even if only taste testing...:rotfl: :rotfl: Hubby seems to be going around the house sniffing all day when I'm baking - mind you, I do love the smell too.

I really want to start growing some veg and stuff, but we are trying to move (council, so would be exchanging) and am reluctant to start as if we find someone who wants to swap, we will have to move within 6 weeks, so everything would have to be either left or uprooted. Couldn't have a pottio as dogs would eat them (this is their area and they've already eaten my new little Rowan tree I got to plant up:mad: - just the roots left when they had finished) garden then laid to lawn (what there is of it) with a small flower border at the bottom so as we want it to look it's best, reluctant to start putting pots all over it.

Can't wait to move and get my proper allotment going - next year I hope to be selling stuff outside the front door I'm gonna have so much!:rotfl:

Saturday seems to be everyone's day of cooking and cleaning - strange how good you feel when it's all done:D - I find it really therapeutic - I think it's the beating and pummeling of cushions and pillows that I like best - especially when I'm stressed - I sometimes put a face on them in my mind when really stressed...:rotfl: :rotfl:

Right, better get on. DS seems to have vacated his bedroom and he's SUPPOSED to be sorting out his dirty washing and tidying his room - I don't know, unless you stand over them they don't do anything, think I'd better go pummel a few cushions....

Really annoyed with Tescos and myself. Brought two packs of walkers crisps (21 packs) for 3.09 each that I thought were BOGOF. Got to till and they werent apparently even with supervisor checking. Thought I was just daft until today and online they are BOGOF from the 5th. The stupid thing is I chucked the receipt otherwise I would be down there like a shot.

If you used your clubcard, go to Cust services with this & the card you paid on - they can trace the transaction - they may complain - but they can (helpline will tell you to do this, so it is head office policy) - you should then get a FULL refund of both packs and get to keep the crisps, as it is a pricing error

I've done this myself before - worth remembering. To be helpful, you need to know the date of purchase too - and a rough time would be good - but the helpline can trace this from your clubcard

  • 29th may - 5th June £47.61
    6th June £47.60

We would have been under our weekly target of £40 in week one as only spent £36.91 initially. However dh and i both came down with an awful sickness/tummy bug and had to buy extra toilet rolls (you get the picture), lucozade and paracetamol so it all went wrong.

Been stocking up the freezer with batches so hopefully next few weeks should be better.

    Afternoon all

Well I did go into the NAFFI early and so i haven't managed a NSD  still for €7 i got:-
    • 3 packs of extra lean braising/stewing steak
    • a huge cauli -that looked better than the longer dated ones:confused:
    • 2 x 750g bags of baby potatoes
    • a net of red onions
    • 4 big sweet white onions
    • 2 kilo oranges
    • 2 packs sliced roast beef
so i think thats really good ...they did have other bits but nothing that i would normally buy...
Hubby treated me to the new Good food guide and Fresh ..and have allready spotted some nice ideas in there ;)
