  • Risotto. Use some of the gammon chopped up in it.
With veg/pasta in a cheese sauce for a real scrummy filling meal.
    Put the kettle on. ;)
  • Gammon & Leek Macaroni is great for left over Gammon! Cook some leeks and garlic, then add dried macaroni and gammon with some thyme and simmer in chicken stock until the macaroni has absorbed all the stock. Yummy!!
  • Old fashioned ham egg and chips, always a favourite.

Couple we do (generally use ham or bacon but gammon would work equally well)

Risotto with ham/gammon, leek, frozen peas, tonnes of garlic (just in case those pesky vampires attack) and onion

A kind of cheats carbonara - bacon, leek, chilli, garlic (ok I unashamedly love garlic) and onion fried up, then pasta and creme fraiche chucked in and a tonne of black pepper added.

My mum's forever buying the decent priced gammon joints in Aldi or Lidl (I forget which of the two she's in love with lately - it varies) and using them for cheesy vegetable bakes and the like.

I put ham, cooked potatoes, carrots, onions or leeks or whatever veg I have in ovenproof dish and cover with cheese sauce and then cook in oven.
  • I usually make a pie. I think I am going to give rissoles a go next time. Thanks, Sonnycat.

    Debt-free and Proud!
    Hi all,

I'm new to posting on this board (have come over from the debt free wannabe board) .......

I brought a huge joint of gammon (3.5kg) that was massively reduced because I thought I could do so many meals with it and now I'm struggling to think of things to do with it. I'm intending to cut it up into smaller joints to freeze.

I'm intending to use some for sandwhich meat and a gammon and pineapple night, but what other meals could I make with it?

    Thanks, Soph x

How about something like this? http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/168623/gordons-honey-glazed-ham

It would also make a lovely soup. My husband's nan used to make one with chunks of ham, a tin of tomato soup, butter beans and dumplings. And other ingredients but you get the idea. She died years ago and he still talks about it with wonder.

Edit: If anyone knows roughly what the recipe is - I'd be SO grateful to make it for him :)

ooohh that recipe looks lovely, thank you, I'm sure mine won't look quite so neat though! I'll try the soup out too, thanks :-)

Chicken and ham pie is a great favourite of mine, and a good way of using up leftovers from a joint. I also use chunks of gammon in macaroni cheese, or to replace the bacon in a carbonara sauce to go with pasta. It's good in fried rice too - cheaper than a takeaway, certainly. :money:

I know there's a thread on uses for a gammon joint round here somewhere - I'll go searching but I expect the board guides will beat me to it... ;)

    ETA - no, they didn't - it's here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/126644 :)
Back after a very long break!
