This is my comment though that by reporting abuse we are self moderating. That does not lead from the top and is reactive not proactive. If the tone of the forum is to change then there has to be no tolerance from mods.

But as we are all adults here, we have a human obligation to moderate ourselves and each other via discussion and exhortation. Surely we cannot expect to be nannied and moderated all the time "from above"? Should Forum Team and board guides start going into threads and telling us to behave every time they feel someone is offending someone else, we'd rightly have complaints of being over-moderated and policed.

There are 320,000 users in here, a good percentage of which are temperamental, or touchy, or judgmental, or plain nasty etc. Can you imagine the hordes of mods we'd need in here in order to have every thread and post read and vetted so that at the first sign of naughtiness one could step in? And then there would still be complaints from those who don't want to be moderated in excess.

This is a free forum where we get LOTS of money saving advice and information. Speaking for myself, I don't care if some sad git chooses to bully me as I can: 1) put them on ignore and/or 2) report to abuse.

All in all, I think this forum runs well considering the large number of users.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

i started a thread exactly the same (almost) as the op's a few months ago.
some people on this site seem to enjoy upsetting others.
but...the majority are well meaning and very kind :)

my thread was hijacked by a couple of people having a slanging match about something else, and eventually shut down :(

i think the trick is to engage your brain before you post, and remember to be nice!

    Just found your thread slobbs123

i know this post will be deleted but...

    (sorry bold wont turn off)

They will always be people who are kind and others rude and we all have off days and sometimes people vent there anger, its just the way it is

Also people sometimes make the mistake and interpret rudeness when it wasnt meant but sometimes it may come across that way, most of us are guilty of this and vice versa

The Op hasn't left so I dont understand why she posted this if she/he feels so strongly

If people upset you so much my advice is dont contribute to that thread and or block that person so you wont see there post unless someone quotes it, its easy to do in the
just view user and put them on ignore mode

I came across one the other day and I kept reporting him and 100% of his posts were abusive.

    What did the FT do?

    Deleted his post!!!!!!!!!!

    They should have deleted him.
How can any forum our size have pro active moderation? We cannot predict what people will say, and across the vast number of posts made every single day (already we've had more than 10 books worth), it would require a member of staff per thread per board continuously refreshing to see if an abusive comment is made. It is simply not feasible.

However, if we can improve our report an abuse system, naturally we are happy to learn how we can improve.

You don't even seem to look at what member report to you, you just take some action on a guess I think.

We can be your eyes and ears, but when we contact you read what we report, it may give you a clue to the correct action to take.

Perhaps you'd have more weight behind you if the OP had actually taken a break like they'd said in their first post? ;)

But as they are still regularly visiting and posting on the site, it perhaps kind of negates the reasons for this thread?

Actually, mrcow, I left for 4 days, which was a record for me :p and I have only posted about 4 times in 3 days.............:rotfl:

Gotta say this - yep, even in my very short time here - the added value and genuine help I have seen provided across the range of subject matter on this forum is nearly unbelievable. It is massively positive that this forum exists - and I doubt if there are any members who do not realise and appreciate that.

How much is our monthly subscription - zilch!

Sure there may from time to time be negatives, tell me anywhere in life that there aren't ...

Fwiw ... I'm thinking of staying for a bit.

When you said "a bit", I think we were all thinking a little longer than that.... :rotfl:

I agree with you Krisskross. Very arrogant to assume anyone here cares whether you stay or go.

If you read my post you would see that I did not assume anyone would notice........
I appreciate some may be 'fragile'No not especially fragile but I was tired of the rows going on in certain threads .
