You are very new to MSE - we usually get at least one 'I'm off!' thread a month (although to be fair, we've not had one for a while) and all the reasons on these pointless threads are good reasons - according to the OP.
You have to remember that DT and the Arms are the 'roughest' areas of MSE, where people can come and have a hearty debate. Sometimes it gets rather heated - but we are all adults and there is quite enough moderation on this site, we certainly don't need any more. If you want cuddles and love I would suggest Debt Free Wanabee, they are very friendly and helpful and even the trolls tend to stay away from there.
Finally, there are always going to be trolls on any internet forum - they are to be laughed at and then ignored.0 -

You've obviously not been on the house prices boards recently  I thought there was going to be a proper food fight the other day!"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
The way I see it there's certainly two sides to MSE - the main boards, and DT.
DT is for Discussion Time. It has hearty debate, unabashed opinions, interesting ideas and unlike 'real life' a lot of people are happy to cut to the quick rather than pusssy footing around (and I'm excluding the obvious trolls here). In real life you rarely get afforded such a low level of BS, and most people can accept that in DT, it's just a sometimes thought provoking volley of individuals opinions.
The only other board that I really post on, and where most of my posting does go is on the Pure Money, Insurance & Life Assurance board. Here there is a very definitely different 'feel' to it. People come there looking for advice, or to help others. Making judgements on other people's lifestyles on this board is not really cricket.
I was surprised a little while ago when someone posted in DT about making a claim, and the difference in response they got in DT was dramatic in comparison to that they would have received had they posted over on Insurance - but then as I say, that is surely what DT is about? It's all about debate, and not really about advice at all?
I never did work out whether the OP on that thread had posted there deliberately to find out other people's moral opinion, or whether they'd just not associated it with being an insurance thing.
I think both boards have their place here, and I quite enjoy all of it - I'm happy to ignore the tw@ts, help others & take advice and info and occasionally get the popcorn in & watch the debate over in DT.
Long live MSE & all who post on her!

PS: Blind Faith by Ben Elton is a somewhat interesting read for anyone who regularly posts on any forum on the internet. All posts made are my own opinions and constitute neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

We get the occasional troll visiting DFW and they are dealt with as soon as one becomes apparent. We are very aware that newbies who post for the first time are often nervous and are sometimes feeling desperate and dare I say it in some instances suicidal. We will do our best to offer support and advice and will deal with any troll activity. In fact there is a sticky over there about nasty people posting on the DFW forum as well as the daily troll patrols.
Some people do post things that may not be favourable, but remember that this is because what someone is thinking doesnt necessary translate properly into board speak and therefore they can appear to be unnecessarily rude.
Remember if someone posts something you really don't like or if it is a troll there is a little red triangle in the bottom left of each posting - click on it and send a report. Also if you right click on the perpetrators name you can then choose to ignore them.0 -
I left MSE.........for about an hour or so, I wanted to see who thanked me so I hurried back
Edit : nobody did thank me for the unhelpful shoite I posted, so im gonna leave again !0 -
I 100% agree with the OP. This site was helpful at the beginning there was one incident in the early days of infact a board mod being ousted which left a nasty taste in my mouth, but the general feeling was a lot better. IMHO it has been going downhill steadily in attitude in the last 2 years. Some threads and the attitudes and cliques make me quite upset. There was one post recently on family board where someone had broken their arm and their husband was asking how will i cope with work and my son etc. and all he got was stop wingeing. He was a failry new poster, but he won't be back.
There are a lot of people that view the boards as guests and take from it while never giving back and they annoy me, there are lots of them out there, but whilst it is a nasty place we can't expect them to put their heads in the lion's mouth.
I have had cause to message a member of MSE team about the feeling of the site - they were fine if ineffectual and to ask technical to change my username as I felt I was being bullied only to be bullied by the technical team!! When the attitude of the forum team is like this we can not expect the forum to change as they set the tone - change the forum team I say.
As far as the term trolls is concerned I had some trolls on a thread and said so to be shouted down that troll was a term misused!
I think I must be the only person who doesn't know MrsE's previous ID - intrigued know, can anyone PM me the answer?
Savvy - who has all the aliases - I feel really thick for not picking up on AE's.0 -
I agree 100% with the OP too.
In my opinion the main reason for these problems is as follows:
People act differently on the internet to how they do in real life. Thats one of the evils of the net (though I do think the advantages massively outweigh the disadvantages).
Now I know the users concerned will deny this, buy people talk to others on forums in a way they wouldn't dream of talking to people face to face.
A lot of the attitudes expressed in this forum would result in a swift right hook outside in the real world. I'm not a violent man, but in my role as a bobby I have seen fights over far smaller issues.
I really do think this site needs heavier moderation. I am a member of a number of forums on which slanging matches are simply not allowed. If a thread turns into a slanging match it should be locked.Match betting 2/04/08 - present profit £607
Cashback sites 2/04/08 - present profit £223 (mostly through bookies)0 -
So that is myself and Tomlad that feel that it is the attitude of the management that is lacking and that there needs to be heavier moderation. I agree that as you are anonymous people do say things they wouldn't dream of saying in really life - in fact my husband was supposing that people come on here after a bad day biting their tongue to vent and lash out at all and sundry. Well my message to those people is get a punch bag it is more cathartic!0
