  • Hello folks and happy birthday to Learning to Save!

Well, I'm new to all this OS lark and was feeling chuffed as it's the end of the month nearly and I'm under budget (by £2 but every little counts!) on the food shopping, have been using vinegar to great success in the kitchen for cleaning, have been making sarnies for the husband every day, making food for my gorgeous 8 month old instead of buying jars and have made plans to grow some spuds in the garden!!!! Wooo!!!

BUT, dun dun duuuuun.... last night, the Mother in Law phoned to say she was going to visit Thurs for the day (love her really but it's ruined my shopping budget!!!).

I never know what to cook for her at the best of times as she doesn't eat onions, garlic, leeks etc and now that I'm money saving, that rules out yummy cheap stews and mince dishes! I'd really appreciated your ideas and suggestions....! I've got some cod in the freezer and lots of spuds so that would be a good basis to avoid splashing out on any extras!

Well, I hope you all have a good day. I was going to baby & mum group later but now I guess I should plan to give the house a good clean instead!

Oh dear... what a lot of catching up I have in the house  We had the usual weekend deferal of jobs (impossible to hoover etc when everyone is in  ) but Monday I woke up with really sore fingers and I found it difficult to grip stuff so by the time I'd been shopping, the Gas man (who came to do our yearly check-up/maintenance) had gone it was 2pm and my hand was REALLY painful so I did the very minimal stuff (not a chance of hoovering, it takes two hands to do it properly as we have a cylinder one whose tube bits like to fall apart  ) and got OH to help me strap them up. Yesterday I woke up and they were still really painful (I took the bandage off over night as I don't like wearing bandages overnight :o ) then I remembered how I hurt them - On Saturday I was clearing up the yard, emptying pots, moving cobbles and I managed to trap my fingers between two cobbles as I was stacking them so that would explain the pain :o:rotfl: Strapped my fingers up again and went off to see my mum to help her with some family tree stuff she's trying to do. Came home and my fingers were aching but not as bad so last night I took the bandage off to go to bed and they more or less felt normal again. This morning I've woken up with two bluetinted fingers - guess the pain has been the bruising starting to come out. They're starting to ache a bit again, but at least now I can bend them and pick stuff up properly :D So I have hoovering, dusting, dishes (OH did do some, but there are still enough left to warrant them being done ;) ), washing and ironing to catch up on  But first I'm going to have a nice cup of hot chocolate and catch up with my Christmas Preperations holiday01.gif

    Re mil and food

    Omelette?

Home made pancakes (very thin) stuffed with cheese and any veg you have in and chopped up ham?

Rice or noodles with any veg you have already lurking?

Jocasta Innes did a great recipe for hotpot which is basically 4 large potatoe and a couple of large onions with bacon chopped up in a cheese sauce. You slice the potatos and onions really thin and assemble it all - pour on cheese sauce and bake in oven for 2 hours.

Enjoy your strike and let us know how you get on!;)

Hi Kankan! How about this for your mil?

    Arkanites lovely recipe for:
    Fish Pie
    1 piece white fish
    2 oz butter
    2 tablespoons flour
1 pint milk (or skimmed powdered milk made up)
    2 potatoes

    Method:
Peel and cube potatoes and place in water to boil
Steam white fish (a la school style, on a plate over the potatoes while you boil them)

    White Sauce/ Cheese Sauce
    2 oz marg or butter
    2 oz flour
    500ml milk
    seasoning

    Method:
Make white sauce: Melt butter stir in flour until mix is thick then slowly add milk a bit at a time whisking continuously until all is added in and you have a thick creamy sauce. Let cook for a few minutes to ensure flour roux is cooked thoroughly. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If making cheese sauce stir in 2 oz grated chees at this stage and allow to melt.

Remove steamed fish from Plate and flake, place in oven dish, add white sauce to cover. Don't use it all if you don't have to. Mash boiled potatoes and use a small knob of butter to cream them. Pile potatoes on fish mix, smooth over to cover fish. Ruffle potatoes with a fork. Place under grill to brown potato topping.

Serve with peas or other veggies you'd like, garnish with a small piece of parsley

This is pure comfort food :D

Apologies to BG I tried to do a link and it didn't work!:o so copied and pasted instead!

MimiF :grouphug: You must be so worried, well done for staying so positive that will help your dad so much when he starts to recover.

:bdaycake: Learning to save - enjoy your meal out.

Kankan I'd make a cheese sauce to go with the cod & then make wedges with the potatoes - coated in paprika is good as she doen't like garlic.

I'm off work at the moment because I woke up with dreadful back pain yesterday. I have no idea how I did it as I was fine when I went to bed.

Anyway, it's a little easier today (although I can't bend down, lift anything or move quicker than a very slow 100 year old). I'm afraid I'm not very good at doing nothing so apart from sitting here on a VERY upright chair I have a loaf in the BM, a SC full of cooking apples stewing (a gift from a friend with a treefull), the ironing is done (I got DH to get the board & iron out before he went to work) & I've planted up a pot of tulip bulbs I was given for my birthday. When the SC has finished with the apples I have a squash to turn into soup for tomorrows lunch.

Reading that it sounds like I ought to be at work but there's no way I can manage an hour each way in the car & then a whole day at a computer desk so I promise I'm not skiving.
