Personally I wouldnt touch either of those with a bargepole..
Panasonic or SAGEM TVs seem to be getting the best reviews lately..
As for the size... it again depends what your watching.
With DVD,s Bluray, or any high definition source you can sit a lot closer to the TV, but ordinary standard definition (BBC and stuff) can look fuzzy if you are too close.
You should be ok with 42" though...
bigger the better I say as long as the pic quality is good.
I bring my sofa to 8 feet from the 50" tv when we watch high def movies.
Usually its at about 16" for daytime tv viewing.“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
i was told to try and get a 1080p tv0

i was told to try and get a 1080p tv
OMG... now it gets complex...
OK 1080p IS a better quality image than say 720 or 1080i..
BUT again it depends what your watching and on what size TV..
On a 42" I personally dont think you would actually see the quality improvement with the naked eye..
1080 or 720 is the number of line displayed, the I or P at the end means interlaced or progresive scan....
Interlaced plays every other line on the tv alternately IE all odd numbers then all even numbers..
Progresive playes all the lines in order...
AGAIN... one is better for sport(progresive) and one is better for movies(intrlaced)..
This is down to the camera used to record say a football mach as aposed to a movie...
Football is filmed on an electronic didgital camera.. therefore when it is played back on the tv it plays better as progressive scan..
If you watch it on an interlaced TV you get ballsmear.. this is caused by the even number lines scanning 1st. then by the time the odd number lines show, the ball bas moved, so it looks like it is in 2 places at once and gives a slight smearing affect.
Movies are usually filmed on film and then electronicaly re-recorded, so in that case the smoother scanning of interlaced gives a nicer more cineamatic picture..
Am I making this too complicated....?? am I too fussy about my picture..???

the panasonic link before hollywood supplied looks good.
And dont forget to buy thru quidco if you can..“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
i dont own a credit or debit card so i cant really buy online
so there is no point me spending that little extra and getting a 1080? i definately want a plasma! are plasmas ok next to a window or do you not see the picture clear?
are there any makes to avoid, as i have to admit anything i have ever bought before is only jvc and samsung0 -
Shame..buying online would save you ALOT of money or get you a much better TV.
The sunlight from the window may be a problem making it hard to see the pic because of reflections.
Some TVs have special filters on the screen to help with this.(I know SAMSUNG does)“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
shopping goes from fun to scary in a second lol

the best thing is to look around in TVshops and write down model numberd of sets you like.. then type them into google and see what people are saying about them.
This site http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php is full of EXPERTS who will tell you what to avoid.
BUT be carefull its easy to get sucked into a spiral because there is ALWAYS a better TV just around the corner...
I finally settled on a 50" samsung plasma and its fantastic for movies.
I know there are "better" TVs out there but there not much better and they were more expensive. on my TV high def stuff looks stunning so I think a 720 tv is fine... but then if I could afford it I am sure I would say 1080 was better even though I couldnt axctually SEE the quality improvement.
Take a DVD into the shop and ask them to play it for you before you buy.“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
