When the comps ending thread debate was first raised a few months ago, I voted against it as I never used it.... I was very up to date with all the comps... I have (guiltily) been using it recently though because I was away for a bit and got a bit behind so I was using it as a way of checking if I had missed any. I did a comps ending thread back in July as a way of thanks and to contribute to it. I feel this is a lazy way of comping for me and I would be happy again without it as I did fine without it before but rely on it far too much these days and it is lots of work for the person whose turn it is to do it. It has been causing alot of problems lately too.

I'm another one that originally voted for the comps ending threads. Of course I was a newbie back then :)

I'd definitely vote against them now & agree with the many that say they cause more trouble than their worth and are a lazy way of comping. And I agree with Kips and reckon it will be newbies that like it and oldies that don't.

I used to love the daily messages but got fed up with them not turning up so use Google Reader now. No missed comps and I go through the ones I'm not interested. Far simpler :)

I agree i'd never enter kids ones as i don't have kids, and even though i'd often like the prizes, i'd be taking it away from the kids. I also have the same bugbear about people who enter comps intended for students by pretending to be one, as a studious student, thrills in life are few and far between, and my food budget of £8 a week has become normallity, there are many prizes on student sites which i would dearly love to win, then i see on the "thanks" buttons that it has had 300 odd entrants....i sit and think are all MSEers students?? doubt it!

I always tick thanks when i've looked at comp post whether i enter it or not its a way of thanking op for taking time to find comp even though it wasn't one i wanted to enter and also i can quickly see i've already seen that particular comp . the amount of thanks a comp post gets isn't always a way of seeing how many have entered plus there are people who don't even bother to thank at all
  • Well i've started entering without aid of the comps ending list now...1 page down, 186 to go LOL i might be here some time!

There is obviously a lot of strong feeling about the ending lists. I don't know if a poll is the best way to go, but I think after reading comments and considering the threads if there was then I would vote to get rid - I don't like all the arguing it causes (and am regretting volunteering to do my first on later this month!).

I don't enter kids ones (as I don't have any) or maternity ones etc (as I'm not pregnant). I do enter student ones as I am currently doing my masters (even though I also work full time) but once that is finished I won't anymore. I do think most people are generally honest and only enter comps they want to win, and we're never going to stop the ones who enter with the intention of selling.

Oh and I only use the thanks button when I've entered a comp, but I am extremely grateful to all those who post comps on here, whether I'm interested in the prize or not. :):)

As a newbie i stumbled across the competitions forum following looking lesewhere on this site, new nothing about it before. Never considered the 'politics' of the comp ending thread, just considered as part of the format of the forum and of course I use it because only one week or so in I am not ahead of the game. However if it were to go then yeah I dare say i would have to do a couple of sleepless nights to catch up, and then structure my way of enetering the competitions differently.

I can imagine that it is a hell of a lot of hard work for those who comile the list, and like all the efforts on this site I am sure you know its appreciated. Hopefully when I am more used to it I can contributr by posting comps etc.

As for a lazy way of comping???? well i can see the point, but isn't this whole forum about trying to help people as far as possible to stand a chance of winning something? Of course if thats at the expense of fall outs and arguments then its right to question if its worth it. But never detratct from how brilliant all you guys are who do this. :T

    happy whatever happens

ps. dont enter kids comps either on the principle of it

pps. losing the plot this morning. just entered a comp wher i have answered that you usually find a shed in your ............. lounge! doh!

I tend to "rely" on the lists as they do make comping a lot easier/quicker and, of course, I'm really grateful to those who take the time and trouble to produce them.

However, if they were not there anymore, I'd miss them for a while then get used to finding them on my own rolleyes.gif Because they're listed, I do tend to enter more than I probably would otherwise, so to have to find your own is probably a fairer way of doing it and might give folks a better chance of winning.

So, neutral on this one ...
    Wins since 2009 = £17,600

    MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS

But i wanted to know what technique is best for going through the board? Do you list them by date and just enter them all, what happens when threads are bumped? As someone with little time i'd totally appreciate it if someone could PM me with suggestions so i can get a head start before the ending lists go. ps, i know about checking the thanks :)

Hi Jade, I don't know if anyone has PM'd you with any info but if you take a look at the Comping Guide, Getting Started (I), "I want to enter comps, what should I do first? / Where do I start?!" - it talks about ordering the comps into 'Thread Start Time' this would means as you work through the list they aren't moving around when posted upon. Have a read of that section as there is a downside to doing this. :)
Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out

Well done Velvetglove for 'post of the month' for that guide! ;):D:D:D

Edit: I also don't enter children's comps - and only go in for ones I could make use of (or for my OH). I have seen a bug increase in people offeringup prizes and do think it's a shame that they've entered them in the first place. The only thing I can understand is if they've won a runners up prize. :)
