Smelly Fridge...

I am sure there has been a post or thread about this before but I can't find it. I think the smell was caused by some old cream in the fridge. The problem is really persisting as I have a (very nice) side by side fridge freezer thing and so the smell filters from the fridge into the freezer and then back again... isn't technology amazing!!

I am sure that Bicarb will soak up the smell but do I just put some in a bowl?

Yep! wash with a MILD solution of washing up liquid. Then rinse.

Just put half a tub of bicarb in a dish and stand it in an out of the way corner. I change mine every six months or so, though I'd bet you're supposed to do it more often :)

    Where do I buy bicarb?
  • You can buy it in supermarkets - it's usually with all the baking stuff. It also tends to be cheaper than buying the bigger boxes from Boots, so unless you are going to need industrial amounts, Tesco's etc is your best and cheapest bet.

I agree with squeaky - just a small pot of bicarb stuck in your fridge does wonders - and quickly too.

Good excuse for buying more baking supplies....as I only had half a tub of bicarb in the cupboard... WHen my Mum went to Oz she gave me either some bicarb or baking powder...

will have to look right at the back of the cupboard! Wonder what else I might find :D

I would take out all the shelves and give a good clean in case there is something lurking underneath.

Edited to say - not that I am saying you're dirty!!!

  • I recently had a bad smell coming from my utility room. We tore the place apart looking for it for a week thinking some critter had died in there - we used to leave the door open to use the tumble dryer.

Only found out once we'd emptied the room it was the fridge-freezer  well, the back of the fridge freezer. Seems some meat from Tesco was badly packaged and leaked into the little hole at the bottom of the fridge. So I mixed a weak solution of bleach and washing up liquid and poured it down the hole, problem solved :D So if you have one of those types of fridges, might be worth a look (Sorry its taken me 3 edits to make this coherent - I need a lie down now hehe)

The bicarb sounds fab, will try that in future.

Kim and Aggie once recommended using a few teaspoons of ground coffee in a bowl in the fridge as a deodoriser. I've never tried it but it sounds plausible - provided you don't mind having milk and cheese that smells of coffee.
  • might I add another suggestion other than bicarb.
Toothpaste, gets rid of any marks that you may have inside your fridge and leaves it minty fresh too!
  • I second the Kim and Aggie suggestion. I think they actually put ground coffee in an old CLEAN pop sock, tied it up and put it in the back of the fridge!

  • I often cut up a fresh lemon and leave a half or a couple of slices in the fridge to keep it smelling fresh. Another slice goes in the dishwasher.
