Smelly Fridge...

  • If you have a cool room, shed or loft then keep it in there rather than the fridge - that should help when he opens the fridge but warn him if he needs to get a screwdriver from the shed!

As far as airtight containers is concerned in my experience it makes (good) cheese sweat and not very nice after a short time so I would avoid that and always let the cheese breathe - after all it is a living organism - cheese has feelings too!

    Cheers

    help!

i've got a stinky fridge - we were away for 2 weeks, and stupid me.. i didn't go through the fridge before we left. we had a house/dog sitter who i thought would use stuff up but he obviously didn't.. cos by the time we got back an orange and lemon were sitting up and demanding voting rights!

anyway i dealt with those pretty quickly, and removed anything else that was off, but the fridge still smells stinky. Worse, the smell has infected all the butter - i had to throw out a chocolate microwave sponge last night cos i could taste it in the butter i'd used to make it - and including all the rum and brandy butter i had made for christmas. I just hope it hasn't gotten into the half of christmas pudding that was left over, if i have to throw that away i shall be crying!

anyway, i put half a lemon in the fridge with some bicarb of soda, but the smell is persisting. There's nothing else that i can see that is causing it, so... any ideas? I'm going food shopping on wed or thurs so i don't really want to buy new stuff to have it similarly infected...

    thanks in advance!

well i'd stick a bit of charcoal in there that should absorb some of the smell, but before that i'd give the whole fridge a good rub down with a bit of flash or something. the charcoal will absorb any new smell but might struggle with a pre-existing amount....

We had this problem recently. There wasn't even anything rotting in there and nothing had been spilt but I heaved whenever I opened the fridge.

We cleaned it with stardrops, and it still smelled. Then tried bicarb, and rubbed it with a lemon and it was still bad. We tried everything. In the end I washed it out with bleach, followed by multi surface cleaner, then bleach again. Then rinsed out with stardrop-y water. Before giving it a once over with half a lemon. It smells ok now - not great though.

thanks, mcbiddy, although i have no idea where to get charcoal from.. lol..

cupid_stunt: no offence, but i *really* hope i don't have to go through all that to get the fridge clean!!! i will if i have to though. thanks for the instructions - the really annoying thing is that i gave it a tip to toe clean before christmas as well, and its a huge fridge, almost big enough to walk into (and certainly big enough to stand in, stooped, if you removed all the shelves) so its a mammoth job!

i think i might get everything out and clean it with stardrops later, see if that helps... I'll let you know how i get on.

    thanks again!

I really hope that you don't!
To be honest I think it was mainly the bleach that did the trick but I wasn't happy about putting it in the fridge in the first place. Eventually I decided bleach was better than whatever was there currently.

Hope the stardrops does the trick

cupid_stunt (I keep misreading your nick to be something *terribly* rude) ... i haven't done it yet as the rest of our home was a mess and i had to attack all that first. I *have* thrown away all the butter/marg/lard that was in the fridge, in the hope that that will help, tossed the lemon half and bicarb and put a fresh batch of bicarb in. Everything else that is in there is either bottled/jarred or fresh stuff like fresh fruit/cheese/ham. i'm giving that a few hours and if there's no improvement when i open it, then i'll break open the stardrops.. and then the bleach, following what you said.

mcbiddy: you know, when someone says charcoal to me i think of wood fires, not BBQ stuff - and given that i live in a 1970s flat, without a chimney a wood fire is a bad thing!! Having said that though, you're absolutely right... :o and we used to have some BBQ brickettes somewhere in the kitchen. hmm. might go have a root around. thanks!!!

  • Have you tried putting a cup of vinegar in there - we had some cat food that went off and this was the only thing that cleared the smell.
