  • Hi Britchick, ive just got a blank postcard this morning that says "please call Ruby on 01482 380683 then it has a ref number at the bottom.
But if it was for real they would write the home owners name on it not just "to the Occupier"
I wasnt sure who it was from and googled the address and it took me here and i also rang the number just to hear who was on the other end and they answered saying "wescot" so i just put the phone down,i havent a clue who they are but im just gunna bin the post card,if its important im sure they will send another one,

  • I got a lot of these postcards and letters when I bought a flat which was previously let to people who clearly did not like to pay debts. I always called and let the person on the other end know when I purchased the property, when I moved into the property and that the previous owner lives, as far as I am aware, in Singapore. Since doing this there has been a significant reduction in the correspondence (I don't expect it to ever go away - they just sell the debt onto someone else). I think it's worth contacting these companies to let them know the debt is nothing to do with you.

Anything like that - just bin it!
By calling you have once you identify yourself opened a file - your phone number and your name and of course no dobt telling them the reference on the card meaning they have your address. DCA's should 'never' act like this as it's an underhand way of gaining information (at your expense).

    Hi
I came home today to find I have received a blank postcard addressed to "The Occupier" and a message to call Danielle on 01482 380681. I'm happy to follow the advice given here and ignore them.
I was wondering whether I am likely to get more correspondence from them?
  • I have just had a letter from these guys demanding £94.00. They advised on the letter that you can call on a Sunday between 10:00 and 16:00. It transpires that my debt is a commercial one for Claranet Ltd. Guess what, They can't help with that on a Sunday as the Scottish office looks after these.

I have had no previous correspondence regarding this and, to the best of my knowledge, have never used Claranet for anything.

What concerns me even more though, is the fact that the address that they have used is actually my father inlaws!

    Is this legal?

We received a post card addressed to "The Occupier" today too and asking me to call Chris on 01482380681.

I googled it and found myself back here - good old MSE!!!

    Going to offer some tips:o

    • If you receive debt collection letters at your address for previous occupiers they will NOT affect your credit rating or anything like that. It will just be like receiving junk mail and catalogues - a small annoyance.
    • If you want the letters to stop you can call the company sending them, advise them of when you moved in. Provided the addresses and dates match up and it is not fraud the company will stop wasting money sending letters to the wrong address and try to find the right person's location.
    • HOWEVER it is worth pointing out that each debt is a different account, they are not all linked to one address or one person. This is the right way to have accounts. If the indebted person had multiple debts you might receive different correspondence from the same company so you might have to let them know more than once.
    • If you are 100% sure that you are not liable for a debt, help them to help you! If you just slam the phone down on these companies, or rip up their letters, they aren't going to write off the debt just like that! Can you imagine if they did this - nobody would pay their debts back!
    • Lastly, the general call centre tip - be nice to the operator and they will be more likely to put in the extra effort to sort out a problem quickly! :o
  • Hello,
I only found this site today after looking online as I am absolutely desperate, so I'm sorry if this question is in the wrong thread. I received a letter this morning from a Wescot Debt Collection Company saying that I owe them almost £1500 pounds. I have no idea what this amount is or what it is for. The letter mentions HSBC in small print (although I don't know if that’s who they are acting for), and I do have a student account with them with a free over draft of £1250 – it is currently about £850 – but I haven't used it for two years so I don't think it could be that (and it is a free).
So my question is what do I do, as I am now worried sick (I am not very well at the moment anyway and this morning’s letter has not helped). Obviously I need to find out what this debt is for, and from who, but I don't want to acknowledge it in any way until I know the details (for example, if it is the HSBC overdraft then it is obviously a mistake, so how would I go about sorting that out?). The letter is quite scary actually and threatens all sorts of things if I don't phone them immediately, but to be honest I am so upset about this that I don't really want to talk to them on the phone, I would rather write to them or something, but I have no idea what to say. I just want it to go away. Please could someone help me, I am so very worried and have no idea what to do.

  • Is the letter addressed to you?

If so then get on to HSBC and ask why they have passed your details to a DCA when you are complying with the conditions of your account.

If not then they can't pursue you anyway.
