I've had no dealings with this company but having read through the thread have come up with the following.

It appears as though the company is a member of the CSA (Credit Services Association) ; http://www.csa-uk.com/csa/

They list the following addresses and contact details for this company :
    http://www.csa-uk.com/csa/members-list.php?membername=wescot&submit=Search+Company+Names

They have a Code of Practice : http://www.csa-uk.com/csa/code-of-practice.php

    And a Complaints Procedure : http://www.csa-uk.com/csa/complaints-procedure.php

    Hope this helps
  • blimey, i am so shocked having just read all this about Westcot!!

Here's our situation, and i'd be so gratful for your constructive advice please.

we have recently received letters addressed to our house, but they are using the name of a person who formerly lived here (9 yrs ago!). We know the person, they live just around the corner, so we've been taking this post around to them (we didnt know it was from Westcot until today). So anyhow, today the chap who they are addressed to came round to see us and gave us copies of the debt collection demands (Client "Digibill"). The chap says this is Sky TV, which he doesnt have and never has. We do have Sky TV tho. The chap says we need to deal with Westcot otherwise our address is going to be blacklisted! but we are due to complete on a house move in 2 wks, and we dont want to burden the new people with all this. I rang Sky, and they confirmed our account is in order and that this bad debt has nothing to do with us, asd far as they are concerned. All fine, so we're in the clear, but what about our address being blacklisted if the named person (who doesnt live here) gets a CCJ awarded against him?

Who should we go to for advice and to clear all this up? do we need to go to anybody or do anything at all? seeing as neither me or my wife are actually named on anything as far as Westcot are concerned.

Should we get involved or just let it be and send back all post marked "not known at this address" which is factual.

    Please Help!!

I am not trained in law except for an "A" level in it which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year but I thought that any "blacklist" had to apply to a person NOT an address. I am sure from various items which I have read (including these boards) that this is the case.
It may be worth your while to have a browse through the debt free wanabee board or anything else moneysaving board to see if there's a near enough identical query, hopefully someone more qualified may clarify the situation for you shortly.
Personally, I would return any letters "not known at this address" but I have been referred to as a loose cannon in the past.
    Good Luck.
  • years ago i had the same problem when i moved house i had a sky account that was upto to date but prevoius tenant hadnt paid i kept sending letters back not known at this address and heard no more.If you have got sky or similar watch legal tv its great unless they are working on behalf off authority ie for non payment of council tax or inland revenue etc they are not legally authorised to enter your property do not let balieffs in if you do once then they can keep on entering when they like unless of the exceptions mentioned then you have no choice.Talk through the letterbox if you have too!

Best if you don't get involved.

At one time addresses, as well as people, used to be black-listed for credit purposes. However, this practice has now been prohibited. So your friend's information is out of date, and no-one but himself needs take any action.

Of course, he could write to them and let them know his current address, but I would understand why he might not like this suggestion.
  • Similar advice needed please.

For some reason I am getting letters chasing debt to my ex-girlfriend, who I have never lived with at my current property.

I have passed the letters to her but she seems to be doing nothing with them. Should I just mark them "not known at this address". Will they stop eventually if I do this. I know I am not legally allowed to open them and dont really want to. I have ven provided Westcot with her actual address but still they keep coming.

I am particularly concerned as the property is my parents and I dont want any bad debt taken on by my dumb ex to be reflected on them.

    Please advise.

    Many Thanks

    Ben
  • Please advise.

Complaining to the debt collectors is not the way to do this. They beleive that there information is correct, and won't change it (illegal as that may be). Complain to the original creditor (sky, ntl etc etc) who will then inform the debt collection agency.
Complaining to the original creditor will enable them to check any address changes etc etc, and you can use the data protection act to get them to make any changes to incorrect data.

Either that or just ignore the problem and keep sending the letters back as unknown at this address, as its not your debt. Eventually they may get a court order, balliffs will come round, you call the police, police tell balliffs to go away etc etc
  • Quick update...

My parents have received a call from a solicitor chasing ex. Could this be because I copied in Westcots Solicitor when informing them of correct details?

Is it usual for a solicitor to chase? I thought it was just debt companies and bailiffs??

    Cheers
