You know that subprime mortage crisis we're having right now in the US? Yup, victim here!

If you are on a subprime mortgage you must have had poor credit issues for a long time, or have I misunderstood what subprime is and when it is given out?

You have been spending way beyond your means for years by the sound of it, hence poor credit rating and the only way to get out of this mess is to STOP keeping up with the Joneses and find some new neighbours called Smith who are known to be tight with money and frugal.

Is a private education really necessary? I lived in California for five years in the nineties and my son went to the local public school and state university. He now makes around $150K, which may not be much by your standards but is pretty good for a thirty year old. He lives a great lifestyle on this and has no debts apart from his mortgage. It can be done.

Did you guys really take drastic measures in order to become debt free?

Yes....have a read through some of the diaries etc on here and you will see the types of things that we are all doing to be debt free.

It is a tough journey - no one will pretend otherwise. But it can be done. You have to make decisions that initially seem ridiculous/painful/out of the question......but eventually you get to see that it is getting you where you want to be.

I think the idea to take the "green" stance is an excellent one - no one can berate you or ridicule you for making those types of changes.

good luck, and let us know how you get on.

so I called my wife over the weekend (currently on business trip overseas) about cutting off on the country club membership, and she basically said she was disappointed in me. She said that my ambition is gone, and I just told her we'll discuss it when I go back home. Then she said there's not much to discuss if I wasn't the same man that married her.

Your not the same man she married. You are now in debt hun. But underneath you are the man she married. Would she have married you if you did not have the money in the first place. And she is disappionted in you. Ha. At least you are trying to get things sorted.

    You are kidding on right?

Interesting how you are on a 'business trip' when someone mentioned your IP addy could be looked at. :rotfl:

If you are for real (which I very much doubt) get yourself a pair of balls and TELL your wife things will be changing.

I find it hard to believe any female would take that attitude if told about needed cutbacks, so I suspect she's as much a figment of your imagination as your debt is.

Just in case though.....no-one respects a soft touch, if the money and the good times go, give her a man to replace them with, cos right now...you just aint.

Sadly, when we have been providing an "impression" of one thing, and then reveal to our partners that we actually are something else, it is a shock - you are, the person she married, but sadly you are not now able to provide the things she has seen as "normal".

For this, and any "white lies" that have been told to her like "of course we can afford it" she will be shocked, disappointed, angry......no end of emotions.

There are, however, plenty on these boards that have been through the same situation, told partners who were initially very cross, but who then came round to the right way of thinking and now actually embrace the debt busting methods!

You seem to have attracted some very unfair comments on this thread, and I would suggest that perhaps you start a new thread along the lines of "I have told my wife and she flipped" or somthing similar, that will hopefully allow some more positive comment to be posted.

As for the other posters on this thread - some of these comments you are making are pretty judgemental......please think before you post.

Wow, you are so insightful. It must really seem foreign to you that an American in debt is currently on a business trip and posting on a UK forum board right?

It's fascinating how everything out of the norm for "aliasojo" MUST be a figment of their imagination. God forbid people outside of UK exist! But yeah, you're probably right, so if it makes you feel better, I'm just a 16 year old nerd from yorkshire with nothing else better to do than making up a story on debt because it's such an adrenaline rush to hear people give me advice on saving money!

Seriously, one simple advice for you: If you don't want to help, don't read this post. But don't come in here and tell me I'm making this stuff up, as this is my life I'm talking about. Thanks.

I did think. I thought carefully as it happens. I weighed things up and formed an opinion which I then posted.

Much the same as everyone else really.

Not one person on this thread apart from the OP knows whether this is for real or not. We post our opinions based on what we read.

It's your choice to believe, it's mine to disbelieve. Between all of us the OP will have a well rounded set of responses.

It's my opinion that many people suffer from real hardship and could use some of the sound advice that the good people that frequent this board offer on a regular basis. It's also my opinion that the OP isn't one of them.

Of course if I am proved wrong (although how that could come about I dont know) then I will apologise unreservedly.

Note that the alarm bells are ringing for several doubters here, not just one cynical poster.
