I broke the golden rule and applied to HSBC for their CC and guess what...knocked me back,

Sorry to hear that! If it makes you feel any better, my HSBC CC is a student card which have a 18.9% APR and a tiny £500 limit. I don't think I qualify for any long term 0% deal with an unusual exception of a MBNA card which I still wonder how I got approved for one. Anyway, HSBC online service for CC sux a$$ (banking is excellent though). I'd prefer Cap1 website over HSBC any day. Plus, Cap1 has cool card designs :p

I have no idea whether they do sub-prime or not (I think they might do coz I've got one :p ). I'm only a student and got approved for the following card with £2,000 limit. Perhaps you guys should give it a try:

Maybe the criteria for that card is more lenient than Capital One Platinum or Barclaycard Platinum etc?

The one with 31% APR have high APR because of the annual fee, otherwise the APR is 16.9% (when annual fee is not taken into account).

No CCJ/defaults (still a lil too young for those :p). I've had credit since the day I turned 18 (mobile phone contract, AMEX additional card from my dad) and after converting my HSBC kiddy account to a proper student account with o/d they started reporting green ticks and a year after I got my very own Cap 1 classic card and the MBNA plat (totally unexpected).

I did apply for a lot of cards (Nationwide, Co-Op, Barclays) recently and got turned down by them. Why do I want so many cards? It's insane how I want cards just because they look cool, lol (wanted Nationwide for use abroad though). I'm now 'settled' with all the cards I currently have. Four cards are enough for me. Managing more than that would give me a lot of pain in the a$$ when it comes to budgeting and filing statements!

I am financially "okay" and all my cards and overdraft have £0 balance. All my cards have DD set up to repay in full. Except MBNA which I owe £1,500 (super balance transfer) and repay £200 per month by fixed amount DD. It's 0% until late next year anyway and I plan to pay it back before then.

Patience is a virtue! You might be just as lucky as I was when I got my MBNA card if you go on a cold turkey from the apply button for another six months or even better - a year.

I know everybody wants to get hold of as many credit products as they reasonably can to improve credit rating. But man, living without credit is certainly do-able! Up till 18 I only had a Solo card which I loved, lol! Now that I have four CCs and an O/D, I realised it's not as fun as I thought it was going to be. Now I have to worry about fraudulent transactions, keeping my statements filed neatly in a folder and making sure my bank account balance is sufficient for all the monthly DDs to go through without making me go beyond my O/D limit.

Anyway it's 4AM in Bangkok and I'm heading to bed.

    Nite!
