Sarah, Did you ring HQ about this as they shouldn't be taking your goods back and replacing them against your will, as once you have paid for them (even if they have to refund you) they are your property then aren't they?

This EXACT thing happened to me on Monday @ Beckon (Gallions Reach) - yes bacon joints and mackerel strips were purchased, and I was given a 20 minute wait for the invisible man(ager)!

They told me the same about head office, and also the products will be removed (as we spoke), and sent to HQ!!

So the bacon and mackerel must be different ones if they told me the truth.

I was give the choice of surrendering the goods for a refund, or the difference refunded.

I told them that I actually wanted the goods, and decided to "wait to see what HQ say".

The Mackerel was actually out by £2 a Kilo.

Oh so it was you then pete;) :rotfl:
It was obviously the same items as yes the mackeral was 2 quid over-priced so they have been telling porkies then and not done anything about it.I still haven't got an email back yet so i'll let you know what they have said.

I went into tesco tonight and got 4 CDs which were a lower price on the Top 40 type poster than they were on the shelf. ( Stereophonics, White Stripes, Dido, Snow Patrol.)
When I tried to get a refund they brought the poster and pointed to a small label at the top saying 'Full range of new releases at tesco.com'
CS 'You see, these are the internet prices. Its always cheaper on the internet.'
An update- after one phonecall to HO where the woman was rather obstructive and didn't seem to understand my point, I got through to a manger who has called the store. They called to say I could have a refund as it was ,after all, false advertising. So I'll be popping down there later.
Thanks for the number- funnily enought the store had given me a number which i thought would be a poor substitute but it was the HO one. ;)
    Thanks again for the number.

Thing is, I actually WANTED some chicken kievs, and just chose the ones with the longest date, which happened not to be stickered. I even mentioned to the cashier that they were overcharging me (because I didn't want the hassle, tbh), and she told me she couldn't do anything about it, she just scans them, and I'd have to go to CS after I'd paid! So what's the alternative, Mr T???

In this case again you should contact HO as your items have been replaced with ones of inferior quality in that the date expires earlier this is a breach of your statutory rights and you would be able to pursue it with Trading Standards.

point out to them that they even confirm that r&r does NOT affect your statutory rights on their own promotional material for the simple fact that this is a further CRIMINAL offence.

Arena Extra in Coventry has the CD poster still up, but the special prices on it blacked out.

Made me smile, because if you look closely enough, you can still see the price through the ink!

Just to shed a little light on recent incidents, there is no way Tesco HO will condone a manager banning someone from the store for availing themselves of r&r, the purpose of the bans is to prevent HO becoming aware of the utter shambles in some of these stores with regards to price integrity as each r&r is recorded in such a way that it brings about a reaction from HO, if a manager bans anyone using r&r he or she will eventually (on paper) eliminate overpricing in their store or at least minimise the attention they are getting from HO.

To ban you for using the policy is quite clearly an infringement of your statutory rights as a consumer and if you can demonstrate this has happened Trading Standards must pursue your complaint, so report the slimy s*its, keep your till receipts for all refunds you have received to demonstrate a pattern and justify your complaint as all are timed and dated as stated previously the link between the refund and replace and the ban will be extremely difficult to disprove with your till receipt timed (usually 20 mins but up to 40 in some cases) will coincide with the ban, they will be able to argue one or two away by saying the customer was aggressive/abusive/intimidating/wearing the wrong colour shirt etc, but the growing amount of complaints will establish a pattern that would be unarguably indicative of a concerted effort to dissuade people from complaining about overcharging.

You might like to point out to staff at the first sign of hostility that you are a member of a consumer group highlighting the overpricing practices in an effort to bring about a higher level of price integrity, which of course you are just by taking part in this little bonanza, remember whilst Tesco can require you to refrain from visiting their premises for any reason, if it has been done in the interest of pursuing unlawful practice unhindered then they have stepped too far, not only for the fear of prosecution but the adverse publicity that such a practice would have even the mighty Mr T wouldn't be able to smirk and walk away from.

If you went into a Tesco store and stole some of their stock they wouldn't hesitate to prosecute you, why then does anybody think that they in turn can steal from their customers and not suffer any backlash, if one of their assistants was to take a few pennies from the change of each customer and retain it for personal use Tesco would consider it theft, yet they do not seem to consider it theft to keep a few coppers off many of their customers each and every day in each and every store.

These managers are abusing the rights of their customers in order to save them selves from an uncomfortable conversation with their seniors as a result of r&r and Mr T is not stupid enough to allow them to continue if you complain.

They are using desperate measure to cope with a hopeless situation they themselves are responsible for, and before anyone comes along sticking up for them quoting such as not enough staff, not enough resources, too many price changes etc, how many people would put up with their bank skimming off a few quid here and there and offering up such an excuse to justify it?

    Hello sarahg1969 -

DON'T GIVE UP, SARAH. We all appreciate the daunting nature of unplesantness and atmosphere, but TESCO HAVE OVERCHARGED YOU.
    It's that simple.
Worse still, as I read your post, are the astuces that CS used to blanch themselves. This must be sailing very close to some illegality - policy-warp, removal of stickers from your paid-for property will surely not be appreciated at HO, so take courage.
RING and complain as others on this thread have(beneficially and positively)advised. Read a couple of posts and be steady and accurate. Also praise good service - I think it is nannaC who posted this sensible tip(among many she has given). Her posts will give you excellent background.

Hi everyone, I've been milling around on these boardsfor a while now but have just registered to post today, I've found everything you guys have been saying about the tesco policy v useful and yesterday decided to try it for the 1st time!! I got the razorlight cd yesterday, then the whitestripes and stereophonics today ( from a different store), thing is on both occassions I was REALLY made to feel like a criminal, both times they only offered refund of the difference until i politely pointed out the policy and said does that not apply in this situation (feigning innocence - probably unsuccessfully!!), and then both times they did it for me, but totally stony faced and their attitude had totally changed, today they then stormed off to rip the poster down and also gave me my (nearly) £20 refund in £2 coins!!

My question is how on earth do you manage to do it so successfuly on a regular basis - I've seen ppl on here saying they've had £100 + refunded in 1 day. I'd love to try to get some free meat from Mr Tesco, but as it is surely obvious what you are doing how do you manage to pull it off - are u just really upfront about it?

Cheers for any comments, would appreciate being able to save some money on meat and cheese!!

    Em.x
    Hi Ems,

I think we all know what you mean by being made to feel like a criminal - unfortunately, most CS personnel tend to be not very nice to customers who dare ask for a refund.

I've had several refunds for different products over the last couple of months (since the thread started) and only once did I get an apology for being overcharged! As everyone here says, we are not doing anything illegal, which is why that sort of attitude is so annoying!

Also, I would imagine that people who get £100 in refunds a day are a minority on this site... and I'd imagine they get stony faces and crappy attitudes as well! This is why it does help developing a thick skin - after all, we know we are right, so don't let snotty CS people spoil your day.

Happy moneysaving and welcome to the thread! :)

I think I may be next. Lady from meats to CS lady - hasn't she done this before?

BUT!!!!!! Chicken kievs (some stickered £1.99, some not, SEL said £1.99). First gave me a £8.97 refund (3 packs - I've got 4 kids). Then took them off me and replaced them for stickered ones with earlier dates, which I objected to. She said tough, so I said OK - I'll let you have that one. THEN - she scanned them and asked me for £5.97!!!! I said no way - your promise is for a refund and keep the product.

She was adamant that the SEL was a special offer, and the non-labelled ones were not part of the offer. Firstly, I pointed out it was a normal blue/white label, not a yellow one, and if it were a special offer, then it would have an expiry date on it. Amazingly, she'd removed the label and couldn't find it!

So they called someone else, who agreed with her, then a manager, who agreed with me, and apologised.

During all this time, there were about 6 security staff milling about behind me, and I was getting decidedly twitchy. Nothing happened though - maybe they were just changing shifts?

This is too stressful for me now. I can't take any more.

Hi Sarah, how awful for you. Just for once a manager acted correctly, get his/her name and ring the customer number 0800 5055555 and PRAISE them. Tell HO the story [ inc going through checkout] and point out that you would have felt totally intimidated without this persons support. Also point out that they forced you to swap your property [you had paid so the goods were legally yours] and made to accept inferior goods with a much shorter shelf life, [you could perhaps hint that it was almost as if they were desperate to get rid of the old stock]. Ask them to put the manager up for an award. They were acting illegaly see Bens excellent reply

    Excellent idea nannaC.

I have always told my friends that get embarrassed with me when I praise good customer service that I have to do it when it's deserved else I have no right to complain when things are bad.
