Tesco have a policy whereby if you are charged a different price at the till than that which is displayed on the shelf they will give you your money back and the item free.

People post here what they have seen.

Are you sure? I always thought it was if you were overcharged . Not just if the price doesn't match. Otherwise I would suggest Tesco are going to bin real trouble!

They are really trying everthing to stop this. Yesterday I got the eagles at £7.97 marked on shelf at £14.97, this is an old one but interestingly the price has changed and now scans at £9.96 a couple of week ago it was scanning at £14.97. This was Hamble (S'ton)

The CS lady said she would have to get the maager as the shelf price was higher than I had paid and the manager had told her she was not to refund based on any stickers on CD's or DVD but only based on price paid v SEL.

I waited 15 min's but she could not trace him and another supervisor said she would allow it and take the wrap if she was wrong.

Why dont they just put the prices right rather than trying every trick in the book to get out of the refund? We have shopes making up all sorts of policy's just to get out of their own offer..

the wording says "and if things dont add up" well they did not, the sicker on the box was less than I paid end of story, and this is one of the oldest mis-prices which they have changed the price of but still not made the price the same as the sticker.

The sticker price on a dvd or cd is one of the clearest price indications of all - there can be no doubt that that falls within their refund and keep policy. What on earth would he/she have said to attempt a clear breach of their own policy?!?!

Also funny that many of these managers can't be located when needed to authorise or otherwise these refunds - I think they like to lead their staff to believe that the policy is negotiable, but are never around to debate this point with the overcharged customer - leaving the staff to do that.

    Mike,

    That IS overcharging.

Definition: Paying more for an item than point of sale OR other advertising leads you to beleive what the price is.

So, if there's a poster in store saying "Handmade 1 foot baskets ONLY £0.99p" and you take one to the checkout and are charged £1.00, you've been overcharged, EVEN IF the label on the shelf next to the products says "£1.00 each".

The point being though that you have to BUY the item. There is no contract between you and the store unless money changes hands (be it cash, credit, debit cards or vouchers).

Have any of you tried to take back an item for refund/exchange you were overcharged on?

Not having fun with my (free still, maybe) insurance at the moment. The refund on the product has triggered the cancellation of the policy, even though CS assured me it wouldn't.

Apparently I need to go in store and fight it out with them as the insurance company are nothing to do with Tesco. (PS: Just created another misprice hunter as the insurance woman couldn't believe I was expecting to have my money AND the insurance under the terms of tesco policy).

So what do you guys do if you need to take back an already refunded product? Am feeling like accepting it gracefully as I won't be out of pocket and do need the insurance anyway. the misprice was just a bonus which didn't last.

    Any tips?

Wallace. You really are a minority on here.

You're happy for a multi-billion profit company to continually abuse its customers by openenly overcharging them, often on quantities of four or more of the same overpriced item.

But you're not happy for a minority of people to notice these breaches of the law and to take advantage of a nationwide store policy and get a refund?

What a strange set of values you have.

Perhaps you should re-read my previous posts. That way, you might actualy understand what I am saying.

I never said it is acceptable for Tesco to deliberately overcharge, nor did I ever claim I was happy about it. What I have said though is two wrongs don't make a right. Deliberately setting out to get overcharged so you can get shopping for free is abusing the policy. It makes no difference if I am in the minority, I can still express my views on this discussion. (Unless of course you are a labour steward and want to throw me out  ).

    I guess I didn't post what I meant :-)
    The original quote was:
Tesco have a policy whereby if you are charged a different price at the till than that which is displayed on the shelf they will give you your money back and the item free.
What I meant was that if the item and SEL said 69p and I was charged 59p, according to the original poster I would qualify for a refund. I don't think that's the case (i.e. you only qualify if you are overcharged).

However, I'm happy to be wrong on this!

Up until spring of this year you were entitled to refund and replace whether you were overcharged or undercharged, the wording was altered specifically to eliminate refund on undercharges which effectively watered down the policy as originally introduced albeit voluntarily in order to avoid investigation for overcharging at the time of it's introduction.

Together we can make a difference.
  • I know it has been previously mentioned that this refund and replace policy was "First introduced early eighties, modified earlier this year to exclude under priced items". I am just interested to know how long some of the regular contributors on here have been able to use this policy to their benefit.

I myself tried it, got hassle and have taken a step back. I rotated several stores so I wouldn't meet the same CS staff but still was recognised and alienated and that was only in less than 6 weeks !!! Has anyone been doing this for years ? and how many stores do you have in your patch ?
