Are there any other examples of small print wrong date errors or is this a first?

I got my annual travel insurance policy (over £100) refunded due to a wrong SEL. Yes it was yellow, yes the offer had ended, yes the date was in teeny tiny letter on the ticket, but Tesco hadn't taken down the promotional material including large signs saying 20% off. I assumed the offer was still on as I was lead to believe it by the large sign saying 20% off.

As a consumer I thought I was getting a good price still, even though the promo had ended. How was I to know they hadn't extended the promo, which can happen?

Turns out my till price was higher, so got a full refund.

  • I did it!! I was absolutely terrified and felt quite sick picking up a basket, had to take a few deep breaths as I walked across the car park and it was the same security guard as the one who was at front desk yesterday. I got the 6 or so items I needed and picked a very visible 10 items or less till near the door. I felt that at any second I was going to get someone behind me saying 'excuse me.....' I didn't look for any mis-prices, I just wanted to prove I was there to buy some goods (not 'deliberate look for items wrong by a few pennies' as I was accused yesterday).

I really hope now someone saw me who was around yesterday just to prove I wasn't going to be bullied!

The ironic thing was - I bought a 4 pack of loo roll - as she scanned it, she looked at the price on the till, paused and looked at the item, 'oh, they must have put the price back up'......I was thinking, god no, please don't let it be wrongly priced and she calls someone over !!!!!!!!

(thankyou nannac, will have a look at the website)

  • this is not the same situation, are you sure you're not a tesco manager hijacking this thread? We had the debate on this recently with regards barcodes etc, the point is you see a big big sign saying price is £... that's what you expect to pay. If that price is no longer available it is fraudulent to advertise it as such, and they can be fined heavily for this.

Expecting a customer to compare barcodes in order to see which item relates to which price is clearly unacceptable. However, it's not rocket science to expect a customer to read an expiry date, and know if the offer is still valid or not.

I have no connection to Tesco other than being a satisfied customer, who for the record, checks his receipt and has never been overcharged.

Incidentally, why are you on this thread, if this is your view ?????????

Oh dear, I must have missed the memo which said all forum users must agree with Kenny4315.

Perhaps it upsets you, but people are allowed to have a different opinion to yourself.

I enjoy moneysaving, but I do have principles, and draw the line at deliberately getting overcharged and then trying to take a moral high ground and arguing for 10 minutes at customer service.

Customers just see a big sign, pick up the item and go to the till. They dont stop to check if the offer is still valid or not and nor should they for every item they put in their trolley.

Wallace mate, next time you shop at Mr Ts, put into your basket some cheese, a little bacon, and perhaps some steak .

Then cook the above for a scrumptious dinner, accompanied by a few mange tout perhaps.

Oh and don't forget to check your reciept.

    Sorry mate, couldn't resist. LOL

Neither is it rocket science to put in place checks that ensure offer labels are taken down at the end of the promotion on the correct date to ensure that customers are not mislead into buying products at a higher price than the label states it should be.

I know a "20% off" sign was visable to all in 50% of the store with my insurance misprice.

The date on the price ticket was only there because I pushed my glasses up my nose and squinted to see it.

And I knew the offer was invalid because of...??? Like I said before, it is not unheard of for promos to be extended.

I shop say twice a week at sainsburys and once at tesco's

find it surprising you have never been overcharged, I would say it happens regularly
( over 10% of the time ) at both shops, and thats without me "looking" for freebies
    - only ever did this once to date , for a case of beer , as I thought the 6 , 4+ foot sizes saying 2 for £16 ... or £7.99 each (on shelf) was a VERY BIG give away-
purchased 1 case at £9.99 refunded

( funny that was £7.99 week before, but went up to £9.99 when they decided it was BOGOF)

Its a hard one... The supermarkets all need to get their act together with mispricing, suppose some taking advantage might lead to it be more of a priority
