On a better note though I noticed they were installing self scanning checkouts :T
I personally refuse to use the self scanning checkouts, as it is taking away jobs. You will get maybe four or six self scanners with ONE member of staff.
That is a lose of upto FIVE jobs.

Had 2 products today I wanted a price check on as no SELs.
The store has 3 price check scanners...1 smashed, 2 on and "working". I tried to price check my 2 products, wouldn't work, so checked a couple of other items in the trolley. They too wouldn't scan. Cleaned the glass, no luck again. Went to the other working price checker. Exactly the same thing.
So I put the items down and didn't buy them.
Have they been disabled due to R + R do you think?Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

it does seem to be a growing trend - the scanners at all 3 Tescos near me did work until recently but now they don't. One of those is brand new and was only installed in the newly extended Tesco Extra close by so it does seem to be deliberate to have them out of action.
However I can't help thinking that this is not only a foolish knee-jerk reaction to what they consider to be a problem, but it is rather naive of them to think that this will solve it or prevent it. In addition to that just stopping people scanning the items isn't addressing or fixing the whole issue that they have with overcharging customers which is where they should be concentrating their energies.0 -
Very true redfox. What's the point of having them? All I wanted was a price...Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

indeed, and there are many people on many occasions who must need to do that when there is often no SEL to refer to. It happened to me today :rolleyes:0 -

The truth of the matter is that the scanners (well the ones i know about are the roundish blue ones) have been discontinued by the manufacturer who no longer makes parts for them. This means that once they go out of order they cannot be repaired. The approx cost for the replacement of these scanners (and it is not just the scanners themselves it is the whole system as they run on old cabling which has to be replaced as the new ones run on cat 5 cable) is around £20k per store. This means that the cost has to be signed off at board level......i'm sure we are all aware of the time it takes to get things like this signed off.
If you simply ask any member of staff the cost of an item, they SHOULD be more than happy to help you. It is partly what they are there for. If you happen to spot one with a hand held scanner, they can tell you there and then without even leaving the spot!Fight Poverty - Hit a tramp!
I don't exist, it is merely your imagination.

Clowance wrote:Tried the Monopoly Quality street on a scanner, also came up "ask member of staff", I wonder if this is new, if they have incorrectly priced items? Actually, the SEL said £11.98 anyway, but was experimenting. In the last two stores I have been in, the Carluccio book has had the stickers removed, CD's generally not price labelled and often not SEL either. As seanparkin says, maybe at least some stores are getting wise.
At my local store they have 2 scanners and it always says ask a member of staff at one of them without fail whatever you scan but the other one always brings up the price so if you have another one in store which most stores usually have about 2 i think then try another one:)Darren0 -

If it says 'Ask a member of staff' its usually NOF (not on file - i.e. not on the till), or the scanner has lost its link to the network.Yes, I work for Mr T, but anything I say is not given as an official response or representation from Mr T, and is usually best taken with a pinch of salt, lightly toasted and served with a chardonnay or rose wine. D'oh, spa2k answered this a few posts ago.
Teach me to catch up some more... the rollout of ProgreSS 3.6 and new electronic gift cards (instead of gift vouchers) has been giving me headaches, never mind catching up with this place!Yes, I work for Mr T, but anything I say is not given as an official response or representation from Mr T, and is usually best taken with a pinch of salt, lightly toasted and served with a chardonnay or rose wine. Wanted to know price of loose grapes at chorley store,as there were 2 prices on display, being loose (free weight) could not use scanner, so went to quiet till and asked lady to price check and weigh for me. She answered, "sorry but we are not allowed to do that anymore"
My reply "ok i'll take them then" she weighed and scanned, i noted weight and price, then said "sorry I don't want them!" Nuff said.

That's rubbish (edit.. from her, I mean, not you!). All she means is that the old 'reduced items' key has been removed (to the supervisor menu) so she can't check a price without 'adding' it to the bill, as it were. Cashiers can no longer do manual reductions or department key entries (hence the snazy new reduced barcode labels).
Ok, I could understand it if it was a non-weighed product, because this would mean she'd have to do a void item, which would go against her exceptions... but then again, she could of put it into training mode.
Anyway, point was that the price of weighed items (including grapes) is displayed in the PLU list...

Hehehe, did I mention my new job interview was next week.... :TYes, I work for Mr T, but anything I say is not given as an official response or representation from Mr T, and is usually best taken with a pinch of salt, lightly toasted and served with a chardonnay or rose wine. Mmmmmmm.0
