    right at moment i get
    51 IS
    87 rent paid
    31 child benefit
    83 child tax credit
and whatever the council tax is

so when everything claimed i should be looking at same figures, plus the 64 DLA and my IS will drop to that 27 and will possibly get 50 ish carers allowance if they see i am entitled?

You are entitled because you care for him more than 35 hours a week and he gets middle rate care DLA

I think the CTC will increase by something like £46 a week.

Overall once you claim everything, you're looking at over £130 a week better off. (£64 DLA, £27 CA + £46 CTC)

OP are you now claiming Carers Allowance as your son is receiving middle rate DLA? CA is counted as income but you get a carers premium.

Yes apart from making sure you have definately told CTC what he's been awarded then all there is left to do is apply for carers allowance. Then inform IS when you get the award of carers allowance. Your awards will keep changing until it's all sorted, IS will go down once the CA comes in, CTC will go up once it's sorted, but whichever way it works you'll be better off. You'll have paperwork coming out of your eyeballs for a few weeks but it'll be worth it in the end, now you can provide your son with the care he needs and probably make things easier on his sibling.

With the HB/Council Tax, your award for IS will continue (but just the Carers Premium bit basically) let them know things have changed once it's all sorted send them a copy of everything (but keep the originals, can take them for them to copy or do them yourself) but as you'll still have an Income Support entitlement, it shouldn't change your award. Just have to keep them up to date.

Still contact your local Carers Centre, they will go through it with you and make sure you are getting what you are entitled to, some have siblings support groups, parents groups etc which most find very supportive.

Oh and then look forward to filling all the DLA forms in again when it's due for renewal.

Good luck (from a Mam of 2 special little ones ;) who's been there (twice) and remembers how confusing it is)

Thats right, although it is bit confusing. Not using exact figures but basically:

The single persons 'rate' for IS is £51.
Then for single carers their rate is £78-this includes the normal rate plus an extra premium for being a carer.
You claim Carers Allowance of £50 which would leave you £28 short of your set rate so this is how much IS you get- £50 plus £28= £78. You then still have more money when the maths is done! Hope that is helpful rather than patronising! I would echo everyone's advice though to go and get help if you're unsure

i rang CTC and they said my son gettin DLA doesnt affect the CTC i will get, it wont go up or down

IS said they thought i said i will be getting carers allowance, but i clearly stated DLA!! muppets!! so they said they will make a note on the system to say it is DLA rather than carers!

They said i would be better off claiming Carers as they said i will be better off by 27 extra a week ?

dawn78, you will be claiming Carers, it is your son that will be receiving DLA. Don't let IS think that it is you in receipt of DLA, as you could end up with an overpayment.

Yes, you need to make a claim for Carers Allowance.

As others have said, you really could do with getting somebody to sit down and go through this with you.
