Tummy Tub - DD loves it and its so quick and easy to fill ,also plenty of muslin squares - can be used to mop up anything and in this warm weather I use one as a sheet in the pram/moses basket:p Another great buy - tommee tippee closer to nature bottles and breast pump ( dd has no problem swapping between bottles and me)19.6.10 Weight loss 6lb0

I'm going to be a Granny soon (July) and am going shopping with my son's partner next week to look at prams/travel systems. My son is in his twenties so a very long time since I needed to use a pram and my son's partner doesn't fully know what she needs/wants either.
Any help in this area would be much appreciated. Thanks.
depends on many factors
how big the car boot is ? or whether its to be used on public transport ?
how much you wish to spend?!
whether you want baby facing you or away or both?
what will it mostly be used for ? walking, shopping ? big bouncy wheeled chassis are fab for walking, but do take up a lot of room in house / car
do you need / want a separate carrycot ? which can be used a babies first bed instead of a crib / moses
I have 2 sons and was a total pramaholic on both
so have used / tried most types of pram / buggy! lol
easiest / best are :
those with swivel front wheels, multi position lie back
easily accessible shopping basket that holds a lot!
the ones which you can fit a car seat to are handy, but not to be used as a "pram" ,babies are not supposed to be in the car seat part all day every day0 -

Take a dolly, and practice holding baby and folding buggy etc....Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
brillian thread
For DS1 I bought loads except a pram - I got my sisters old one.
For DS2 I bought a a M&P travel system and it was the biggest waste of £600 EVER.
I didn't buy a top and tail - i just used a bowl of water
I did buy a M&P babybath for DS1 and it was fab. I got the one that has the back support and side panel things to stop baby sliding at one side then enough space for baby to sit on his own at the other. I think it cost £15 and it was well worth it.
I learned from DS1 to sort through the clothes we got but didn't fit and return them for vouchers/credit note and use them for bigger sizes when money will be more scarce. Either that or keep them and use them as gifts for friends who have babies.
Bottle warmer was fab for middle of the night feeds
Moses basket - grow out of it too quickly. Cradle is much better. I used this till 5 months. Moses basket was used till 2 months
Baby carrier - never used - sold it on ebay
Babyshoes - why? I only started wearing shoes on DS2 when he was 11 months
I'm sure there are loads others but can't thinkOfficial DFW nerd no 551 - proud to be dealing with my debts

Was quite lucky in that we inherited alot from my sister.. crib/cot/loads of clothes/baby bath for on top of big bath/ steriliser/ even pram & pushchair with car seats.
Worst buy
Manual breast pump (although half price in tescos at the time as ended up on bottles after 5 wks)
Loads of toiletries that MIL got for me... really sweet as her 1st grandchild but am still going through them and never used talc yet!!
Also other people buying clothes for 0-6 months (buy bigger or give vouchers I reckon)Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.0 -
One of the worse buys was a bouncy craddle like this;

Both of my kids didn't like it.
In 2nd place of bad buys is the Tomy Freestyle baby carrier which my 3month old has hardley used.
And last but not least is the Graco Contour Electra travel cot which was used a few times only as a play-pen/prison to stop our eldest kid from wandering around when he was over a year old.I hate migraines.0 -
Hi,
Ok, lots of varied responses but here is my pennies worth...
Best buys.....
1. Reusable nappies, especially the Tots Bots ones, Nappy Pail and Eco Balls to wash them.
2. DreamPods (been in since about 6-8 weeks old- even managed to get one for 50p- they retail at approx £30 but well worth it!).
3. Moses Basket (was in the sale and he slept in there in our room for ages)
4. Travel cot/playpen....was very useful for our room once too big for Moses Basket and was easy to move).
5. VTech 'Walk and Grow'- not a walker they sit in but a push a long- he loves the tunes, can also be taken apart and keyboard used on its own.
6. Both his buggy (Britax Excel Travel system) and lightweight push chair (Chicco London). Both were gifts- mum paid but we chose the first and she the second!
Worst....
1. Top and Tail bowl, not really necessary.
2. Lots of tiny clothes, but then many were gifts! I tend to get his stuff second hand and also accept hand me downs now!
3. Reusable wipes.....keep meaning to use them but never get round to it!
Ok, think thats all.
Re the lady asking about travel systems/buggys I would say.
1. Does it fold easily ? (esp if holding a Little bubba too)
2. Is it easy to lift ?
3. Does it fit in the car boot ?
4. How much of it is removable/washable ?
5. Is it a neutral colour ? (in case you want to reuse it)
I would recommend one where the car seat fits on to the buggy- that way can go straight from car to buggy without disturbing LO too much (although agree this is not the best way to carry LO ALL the time as previous poster said- just handy sometimes to save waking baby if asleep!).

Many thanks for all the useful replies re what to think about when getting a buggy/pushchair - they are all very much appreciated.

My advice is when you wheel it around the shop make sure you go at full pace as you would if out and about as with some of them you kick the back as you are walking. This means that you bend forward and walk which is really bad for your back. You might look daft racing around the shop but you need to look after your back.0
