I used just about everything I got for baby ... including most of the above.
The only thing I didnt use was one of those pillow sets (for their head and sides) to stop him rolling over in the night, so that was pointless.
Can I ask those of you not using your top and tailers, how do you wash your babies in the morning? I have found ours to be invaluable.
I COULD have done with fewer clothes, but being a long awaited first baby I guess he (well me really) was a little spoilt.
My BEST buy was a movement alarm (went off once when baby stopped breathing), I can't recommend them highly enough.0 -
The nappy wrapper:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: only someone who has never had one will think they are a good idea!!
And those top and tail bowls-utterly useless!
Not sure why there is not much love on the thread for the baby bath-thought it was great! But then I do seem to have alarmingly small sinks!
Best thing was the rocker thing. Got through batteries like no ones business, but loved it! My mum also bought DD this jungle play mat thing with an arc of toys over the top that she loved.
Ah, memories.....making me broody! Not very MSE:D0 -
as with most, if not all baby equipment, you can "make do" with other things
eg any old plastic bowl/s for topping and tailing
a saucepan for sterilising
old towel op top of plastic sheet for changing
and of course you can "do without" many things eg bouncy chair, but having these things can make like a bit easier!
i loved and used a lot; the Graco baby swing,my son was a very cuddly baby and would hate being put down in the early weeks / months,so having the swing was a godsend !
also as i mixed fed a steam steriliser was good
used the bouncy chair & door bouncer a lot
but not so much the graco entertainer ( safer than a walker though)
mothercare supa bath was fab, fits on top of a normal bath so no stooping down to bathe baby as with a standard baby bath0 -

I am a Nanny, and some of the families i have worked for just use any old plastic jugs / bowls .using the same water, face and hands first then bottom half
I bought and used the 2 sided top & tail bowl for both my sons0 -
Great post OP.
I have searched the forums looking at different baby threads but it is nice to see new ones as new peoople would have joined the forum and contributed their ideas.
Even though hubby and i are only trying at the moment, it is nice to get people's opinions as to what is good to have and/or not necessary.0 -
i have several unused top and tail bowls all given as gifts it was just easier to use a normal bowl as long as you dont 'double dip' the cotton wool you not going to spread germs for baby;s bum to its face
best buy very cheap bath support (about £6) which is basicly fabric streched over a wire frame take the weight of whild washing baby also had a more expensive bath suport (about £30) that came up inbetween his legs under his arms and supported him so much it made it difficult to get round and acctully wash himtwins on board0 -
this threadshows how one person might find something useless and another loves them
i always use my top and tail bowl and have a blow up bath that i use un my big bath (saves water).
i love - gro bags, bouncy chairs (love fisher price infant to toddler rocker, avent microwave steriliser, nappy wrapper for upstairs (free from bounty bag)
i hate my graco travel system - doesn't face me and i hate it
fiddly baby clothes!, johnsons box to keep nappies and wipes in - waste of space and i bought a fancy baby gym from mamas and papas - should have bought a smaller more comfortable onenow mum of 4!!!0 -
Baby carrier. Barely used it.
Nappy Bag - was bought one by mother for my first to put nappies in. Why? I can leave the nappies in their own plastic wrapping in the cupboard.
Matching tissue cover - again by my Mum. I don't use boxes of tissues.
Bumbo - Bought this for number 4 and was a waste of money. Mmm. Ebay perhaps?
Changing mats - an old towel on some plastic, even if its a plastic black bin bag. Esp for girls. I understand that boys pee when taking off their nappy (have 4 girls so have no idea!)
Giant luxury changing bag. Why?? You actually do not need to take the contents of babys rooms with you when you go to Tesco.
Best buys
A separate playpen for downstairs. With so many kids, a moses basket downstairs was dangerous in the first few weeks! She has a quiet place to nap in/play in when I am busy etc and I am not forever taking her upstairs for a nap.0 -
Bottle warmer - what an incredibly useless invention. 10 seconds in the microwave is all thats needed.
Toys for newborns - They ain't interested, lol.
Clothes - God, I had soooo many little outfits for my babies. 90% of them are in the loft. People would buy newborn sized snowsuits even though they were born in the Summer time!!What the Deuce?0 -
Worst ever purchase - the Tummy Tub! Awful design, difficult to use, nearly drowned little one in it
Little one hated it and it was meant to help with colic but had no effect whatsoever. Bought one of these baths instead and it was brilliant: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Summer-Infant-Bath-Tub-BLUE/dp/B00102428S/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=baby&qid=1210952686&sr=1-10
One of those things that's supposed to clear their little noses of secretions when they've got a runny nose. Used it once and never again!
Best ever purchases: Baby sleeping bags - my DD is 3 now and has only just stopped using one. She has always been a brilliant sleeper and I put it down to using these.
I also found the Lindam Day & Night feeding system very useful: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lindam-Night-Day-Feeding-System/dp/B000UPISOU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby&qid=1210953101&sr=1-1 Meant I didn't have to come downstairs during the night to warm a bottle(you're not supposed to use a microwave for warming milk as it can create "hot spots").
Also thoroughly research your pram/pushchair purchases. We had 3 until I found one that I really liked!0
