Just bumped into Lodger 2 (who wasn't in last night). Apparently he has spoken to Lodger 1 a few times, but in his very subtle way (things like "gosh, you like to listen to music at a comfortable level, don't you?"). Apparently, he sometimes can't hear his own music over Lodger 1's  which does not bode well for the poor neighbours!

So I've suggested we get some wine and pizza in tonight, agree on a couple of new house rules, and watch a good film together.

    Plan!

    Rocket Joe's????

I've heard they're the best ever ... and you get two for the price of one (unless you're drunk when, apparently, they seem to omit the 2nd one and send you on your wobbly way)

    :)

Will you be watching the film with or without surround sound? ;)

Ha-ha! No, much as I hate them, I've got a half price voucher for Domino's needs using!

And I don't have surround sound in the basement, just a flatscreen telly with normal sound

Try putting your stereo up outside his door played equally load while he's trying to sleep.

When he comes out to see why the musics so loud, just turn it off and say "I think I've made my point".
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

Whatever you do, do it early. The longer it goes on the nastier it could become.

I haven't had any experience of being a landlord, but a few years ago when I was 18, I rented a room for a few months. It was fantastic to be independent, until a woman moved in to the room across the hall. At first it was fine. But it quickly went down hill:

    1) She stole my food and drinks from the shared kitchen
    2) Would vacuum at 2AM
    3) Would leave a foul smell in the bathroom - Not just post poo smell, possibly drug taking of some kind
    4) Constantly open and close doors in the middle of the night
    5) Knocked on next door's house at 4AM to ask if they had a power cut
    6) Repeatedly wake up the landlord to complain about something in the middle of the night

The list is truly endless what this woman did. I ended up writing several letters to the landlord, probably still got them somewhere. In the end I moved out before my term ended and demanded my deposit back from the landlord for not taking action sooner.

Don't be afraid to confront this person who is taking the mick. If you don't, it could get a whole lot worst. Regardless of how someone seems, this woman supposedly had a degree but was still a nut case.

Get rid. An adult man who is so self-centred and can't/won't give any thought to imposing on others will become a big nuisance - it's in his nature.
