I find a black Teflon coated baking tray stood on top of a cake cooling rack so that the air can circulate works almost as well as a special defrost tray and saves buying speciallyIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

I am going to make some homemade beefburgers for the 1st time.
Would i be able to bulk them out a little with porridge oats and maybe some veg like carrots without them tasting horrible? I would use onions as well but more concerned about the carrots and porridge.
Has anyone does this before.
Thanks

I make my own burgers.
I wouldn't use carrots. Raw they won't cook and cooked they'll be too squishy and make the burger too loose.
As for oats, no idea but they might work if they are fine enough.
Why not make up a mini burger and fry it off to find out?0 -
I get away with a little onion and some breadcrumbs but much more than that start getting complaints!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

The classic binder for beefburgers is egg plus breadcrumbs so I'd stick to that if I were you. Or use cooked lentils or mashed up cooked beans, like kidney beans. I don't think oats would have time to cook through properly tbh.
As for carrots well, perhaps, if you grated some. But my question would be why bother? Why not just have the carrots on the side either cooked or in a classic home made coleslaw? Much nicer.Val.0 -
I sometimes put carrot in my homemade burgers when I want to get more veg into various members of the family.
I tend to form the burgers, fry them for 1 min each side to seal and brown them, then pop them in a medium oven until I've prepared the other veg or fries etc, usually about half an hr.
This ensures that they are cooked all the way through, minimises mess for the grill or frying pan and cooks the carrot

I always use grated carrot and a handful of porridge oats in my burgers and have had compliments every time. The carrot adds enough moisture to help bind the mix without having to use egg (cheaper too):money:. I do tend to cook them in the oven rather than frying though. Both the carrot and the oats are virtually undetectable, once cooked.
