ASDA Carrier Bags - No more freebies

Asda will start charging for carrier bags from 1st June. Woman on the till told me today.
They'll claim it's 'to save the planet' but really it's so they make more money.
Philatio's MSE Tip - Go to Tesco instead
its a joke. its just like a tax. most people only use the amount of bags they need. you dont get many people only putting one item in a bag unless that is all it can hold. we put the 4 pint bottle of milk in a bag by itself coz they are so flimsy and break dead easily. that is why people wont reuse them, they arent strong enough to last. they automatically assume everyone has a car so it doesnt matter if they arent strong. its stuff you to the customers who dont have cars.
if you think charging for carrier bags is bad what about this. virgin media are going to charge an extra £1 a month from june for paper bills. to avoid the charge we have to get an online bill. the excuse is the environment. how does it save ink and paper if we are just having to print them out at home instead? if they dont want to waste material then why have we just recieved a daft magazine wrapped in plastic from them.0 -
I worked for Asda 22 years ago and they used to charge 10p per bag then! Nobody complained because it was common practice everywhere and everybody just used to bring their own reusable bags instead. It was done in the past, what's the problem with doing it again?
i remember when they charged for bags.
there are some differences.
the bags back then were alot stronger. i was at school and my dad was working, what about unemployed customers? knowing that they are probably just useing the environmental reason as an excuse to make more money is annoying.0 -

Got this from the asda site, basically says that the carrier bags are still gonna be available but kept under till so you can't help yourself (and take hundreds, which I've seen people - occasionally not even to put their shopping in!) and the checkout operator is supposed to encourage you to buy/use the re-useable ones.
So I guess that means home shoppers will still be getting their shopping in bags as the bags will still be instore. (The reason you get so many bags is the way the shopping is picked, in theory you could buy 16 items and get each one in a seperate bag!!!)0 -
Whilst it is a good thing to use your own bags, there has been too much hype on how bad for the planet plastic carriers are. We hear they take 1000 years to break down. Says who, what proof is there, they havent been around that long! Tesco say theirs break down in 18 months, this is true, i have put something in one and it disintigrates after a while.
Dont use carrier bags, dont fly, dont drive, dont do this dont do that, its all bad for the environment, its global warming. Oh whatever. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon, it gets on my t***s.0 -

Too true, while I do have reusable bags my favs are the cotton ones I got in new york, so not really too enviro friendly having to travel that far!!!! (I also have a huge collection of paper bags I love but useless in this country...I regularly end up places with a pile of soggy paper mush!!!!)0 -
instead of one bin we should have two. one could be for the recyclable stuff. then all the plastic bags would get recycled. those blue boxes that we get arent big enough for everything and they usually get knicked. that is why we dont use ours coz if it gets knicked we have to pay for a new one.
actually i have forgotten something. we use carrier bags as bin bags. well the rubbish has to go into something before it goes in the bin. you cant throw food waste straight into the bin can you. well not unless you want your bin to become manky.0 -

our adsa gave up on this 2 weeks ago and put them back at the ends of the checkoutWWSD(what would Scooby Doo)0 -
i have had an idea. if they are so keen on the environment thing why dont they give us money back on every bag we hand in for recycling? i remember years ago taking my lowcocks lemonade bottles back to the shop to get 10p.0

I've bought a "Trolley Dolly" fom http://www.zpm.com/products/living/trolley-dolly/default.aspx
Apparently they are out of stock at the moment, but I wouldn't use anything else now!
Cost me £25. But for that you get a great little bag with space for your list, pen, purse and phone. Plus 22 bags! Two bottle bags, two huge pink ones, loads of red ones, and green net pones for veg. It's so small too. I just keep it in the boot, and get it out when I shop. They are strong and washable. You need never buy another bag!I Believe in saving money!!!:T
