I read something recently where a guy said.. have plain carrier bags and I'll pay for them. Cover them with adverts for the store - they can pay for them.

you know what really bigs me about this whole charade is that i used to buy the bags for life then when they brought out the stronger cotton material ones i bought those (they cost more but are better i thought) when those material break they dont replace them only the plastic bags for life! hows that for saving the environment!
  • I guess it could encourage people to shop less. I have 2 hessian bags and over loaded at Mr T. Had to walk back through town. Lesson learnt. Save the planet and my over draft;) :D

our asda recently removed all the plastic bags from the ends of the tills they had so many complaints that they have now put them back, i personally wont be paying for any bags even if it means getting a staff member to help me carry it all to the car. Ive heard many radio and TV interviews recently which state that stopping the use of plastic bags will make little or no difference to the environment

    It's getting ridiculous now.

Was in Debenhams today (25% Clearance!!). Got 3 T-shirts, a pack of 7 pairs of socks and some swimshorts.
    Put them on the counter.

"would you like a bag for those?"

No.. course not. I'll wear them home!

phil - we have to ask everyone if they need a bag!

I think its funny how many people are getting into this "getting rid of plastic bags" malarky. Ok yea its a good move if the company directs its extra profits from that into chairty or whatever, but you should see what packaging the items come into the store in. Sometimes we have 40 odd knickers come in, all individually wrapped in plastic, x that by all the stores across the world and you got alot of plastic.

I cant see a time when stores are totally plastic free. I find that my material bags arent big enough, can only get a few items in. What about if you buy really big items? I think the companies need to do more to reduce the plastic that comes in via delivery, and designing their own bags that really work with the needs of the consumer.

I bought 3 of the Asda plastic bags for life. they'd all ripped by the time I got home!!!! They don't hold as much shopping as the free carriers and they're not as strong in my opinion.
Last time I went to Aldi their large woven cotton bags had been reduced from 99p to 49p so I got a few of those instead. They hold loads, so much you have to watch you don't over do it.

I have to be honest - I don't like the disapproving looks I get when I load up carrier bags at the checkout. I use all my supermarket bags for poop scoops or rubbish bags - if I've got plenty then I'll take my resuables, but I think its very MSE to get rubbish bags for free :)

I popped into our local Asda this evening and queried it with the customer services girl, she rang a number and asked them and basically they hadn't heard this either. What they think it might mean is they are charging for their bags for life (5p) and also for their hessian/material ones (£2.00).

Incidentally they have just bought in a new bag for life, its quite a nice design and still only 5p. I bought up 10 of them with my shopping and I actually got thanked by the cashier for buying them. Yet saying that nearly every other shopper leaving the store had one or more of these bags.
