I sometimes order on the internet and have Asda home deliver my shopping and its terrible the number of carrier bags they use, sometimes only one or two items in each one.

When shopping by foot I take my trolley or if it's just a few bits I have a folding basket and a linen bag. When shopping by car I take a couple of large folding crates and several linen or hessian bags. I've done this for the last 5 years and don't find it a problem.

I carry a rolled up linen bag in my handbag which takes up practically no room and is always handy.

One of the stores that annoys me with the bag thing is IKEA, when they first came to the UK they had strong brown paper bags before changing to plastic bags, then to " be green" they started charging for bags. Strange no one in the press has ever picked this up.

I use Netto's a lot and found paying for the bags really made me aware of how many free bags I used at other supermarkets. I now always have old bags on me (just in case lol) and buy the bags for life or cotton bags as necessary. I don't mind in the slightest if all supermarkets stopped giving away bags tomorrow.

I don't mind paying for the odd bag when I've been a muppet and left my reusable ones in the car. But usually I just put all my shopping into the trolley again once it's been scanned, take it to the car and pack it properly there.

I think the standard plastic bag is useless anyway. They split, they don't hold much and they're uncomfortable to carry. As to reusing them for rubbish bin liners...they've got holes punched in the base, usually, so they drip. The best reusables out there currently are the Tesco hessian ones...good strong padded handles plus they stay open in the trolley while you pack them. Good size too..you can get a decent amount in them without ending up with them too heavy to lift.

If folk are really insistant on using the disposable bags though and don't want to pay for them, grab a handful from the bag recycle unit as you go in. That's perfectly environmentally friendly, after all.

Asda will start charging for carrier bags from 1st June. Woman on the till told me today.
They'll claim it's 'to save the planet' but really it's so they make more money.

They're not going to start charging for the free ones, they're getting rid of the free ones and just having the reusable ones that you pay for.

As for home shopping I'll have a word with the manager when I go back to work tomorrow and find out whats happening.

I think the staff in the stores must be confused then, the lady on the checkout in our local store said that they are going to be charging for the plastic bags that are currently free because "they were told to in the budget".

I worked for Asda 22 years ago and they used to charge 10p per bag then! Nobody complained because it was common practice everywhere and everybody just used to bring their own reusable bags instead. It was done in the past, what's the problem with doing it again?

I do think that the "bags for life" should be free to replace when you've bought one though. Sainsbury's strong reusable bags are 40p each but they don't replace them for free when they fall to bits (which mine are doing already and I haven't had them long). They won't be charging for plastic bags as they did a customer survey and the majority of their customers didn't want to be charged, and their bags are already made from 33% recycled plastic.

I'm also not sure about the cotton shopping bags, they're ok when the weather's fine but I don't fancy carrying my shopping home in them when it's chucking it down, won't all the shopping get wet?

I bought 6 of the Cloth Tesco reusable bags last year & use them when I go to Asda, I've had a few funny looks, I'm just waiting for the day they try to stop me using them, they'll lose me as a customer.

Not according to the staff at our Asda. It's the free ones that are going to be charged for.
