ASDA Carrier Bags - No more freebies

Asda will start charging for carrier bags from 1st June. Woman on the till told me today.
They'll claim it's 'to save the planet' but really it's so they make more money.

Philatio's MSE Tip - Go to Tesco instead ;)

Could not agree more. I would be interested to know just how much money they will make in a 12 month period.

Perhaps they could donate it to a 'Saving the planet charity' then the public may just believe them.

  • Our local Coop only have the bag for life or cotton bags on sale, none of those free flimsy ones. I think it's a great idea, always take my own bags and it might just make people think about waste and recycling.

i agree with lofty_cherrytree - we should take our own bags!

in france they just stopped giving bags out overnight - we soon got in the habit of remembering....a week's shopping rolling round the boot does wonders for the memory!!!!

yes we should take our own bags: but the idea of them donating the extra profit to a green charity is brilliant - let them put their money where their mouth is.

In Tesco, you rarely get credited with the green points for using your own bags, I find. And they cant always be forgetting - it must be policy if you don't ask.
  • I agree living in France certainly improves your memory, also a couple of bottles of wine smashed in the boot reminds you take bags.

Does anyone know if this applies to their home delivery too? Will you get a choice of pay for bags or returnable box?

Actually I think it's a good idea, make more people use cotton reuseable bags and will help to reduce the plastic buried in our land fills as so many people can't be bothered to use recycling bins. I for one don't care if a company makes a little more money at the end of the day its the plastic that matters and as for going elsewhere to shop I think it's just silly after all lots of people go to lidl and aldi and they always have charged for bags. I don't think this will effect asdas customers too much it will just make us all think. Has anyone actually investigated if individual stores are putting the money towards something worthwhile. Our local store donates to local charities.
