i agree about the weakness of the bags by the way. we dont drive and have a 15 minute walk home with our shopping. so we have to be careful and not make a bag too heavy otherwise it would break. if they were stronger we would use less bags.

The re-usable bags you pay for are stronger, its a bit much to complain about something they are giving you free.

i may some day consider buying one if the had some that didn't have Tesco/Asda whatever splashed all over them and they made some that looked a bit more manly and not like a large hand bag

There was something on the news today about carrier bags saying all this "skip the bags save the planet" stuff is rubbish and diverting people away from genuine enviromental issues.

Just mentioning my earlier post about shopping trolleys - how about these?

Alternatively you can get bigger ones (more like the ones the Spanish use - all Spanish not old people!) for £7.50 from M&S, and the one I bought is very pretty but smaller than these, bought from my local market for £10. I'm loving it, just wheel it around, no heavy shopping baskets, pop it into the car, at home just wheel it into the kitchen to put everything away.

There are loads of gorgeous shopping trolleys on the web!

remember we dont drive. the reusable bags that cost money dont squash up and fit into a pocket. so when going to the shop i would be walking down the street with several empty bags waving in the air. nevermind the fact it would feel silly walking along with empty bags.

I have got a "bag for life" from Asda. I have done my best to stuff it with shopping so that rips but its still going strong after six years....

You get more things into it, its generally easier to grip and carry and if you got two bags then you are well balanced. The sooner the supermarkets and local shops start putting on the charges for taking out a bag the better.

We went shopping on Thursday and had to ask for them to give us free bags and the person serving puts out a few at a time - spending almost £100 between two of us meant we needed to ask about 5/6 times and we bought a lot of heavy things that we'd usually double back (3/4 bottles of pop to one carrier bag won't work,

the assistant got stroppy with her and told her that she'd have to make sure she remembered them cause once their stock of free ones had gone that was it and she'd have to buy them or carry the stuff home as it was and if she had to do that it'd make sure she didn't forget her bags again!

I don't see why people put up with "stroppiness" from assistants, if I was at a till and the assistant got stroppy, I would make their life a little more difficult.

They want to hide the bags under the counter? Then they can pack the groceries! And pack properly too!

They put the eggs with the cans, or the bread with the potatoes they can unpack the bags on the till and re-pack again, they don't like the idea and complain or start to argue? No problem, I would just leave the entire shopping on the till and walk away.

I have a car, and there are many supermarkets in the area, I have no loyalty to any individual store or chain.

phil - we have to ask everyone if they need a bag!

I think its funny how many people are getting into this "getting rid of plastic bags" malarky. Ok yea its a good move if the company directs its extra profits from that into chairty or whatever, but you should see what packaging the items come into the store in. Sometimes we have 40 odd knickers come in, all individually wrapped in plastic, x that by all the stores across the world and you got alot of plastic.

I cant see a time when stores are totally plastic free. I find that my material bags arent big enough, can only get a few items in. What about if you buy really big items? I think the companies need to do more to reduce the plastic that comes in via delivery, and designing their own bags that really work with the needs of the consumer.

Yep! And cardboard inside T-shirts and old OK mags and Daily Express - straight in the bin no recycling! Its crazy! I think of how much I seperate at home, then go to work and make more rubbish!!
I'm getting older, and lifes getting harder!

Watch out for fingernail marks in your shopping with an attitude like that.

What is everyone complaining about? Lidl have been charging for bags for years yet nobody's complaining about that, why should Asda have so many complaints aimed at them? Purely because they're a bigger company perhaps? Pretty poor reasoning there, if a company wants to charge for it's bags surely it has every right to, it doesn't have to offer them at all, surely we should all be greatful for the years of free bags we've received and accept that they will cost in the future.
