I agree with Chall - can't believe how many people are complaining about the loss of free (but useless) carrier bags. I've shopped at Aldi for years - their policy is bring your own bags or pay for a plastic one. Its amazing how quickly you get into the routine of just having a stash of strong bags in the car, and a rolled up strong bag in my handbag all the time. I have no problem with it. Its either that or spend my hard earned cash on plaggy bags - no contest - bring your own.

Previous generations always used reusable bags and they walked home with their shopping. Have we become so dependant on plastic carrier bags in the last 30 years ? !

Also I get a perverse pleasure out of parading rival bags in supermarkets - I can see tesco staff eyeing my Sainsburys reuable bags at the checkout and I love my M&S bag so much I use it even when not shopping. I like to show supermarkets I'm not loyal, it might encourage them to be competitive and fight for my custom !:D

By the way - I'm loving the Trolley Dolly bgs and I like the campaign to make shopping trolley's trendy, after all people don't mind having a wheelie suitcase/flightcase so why is a shopping trolley considered 'old lady ' ?

What is everyone complaining about? Lidl have been charging for bags for years yet nobody's complaining about that, why should Asda have so many complaints aimed at them? Purely because they're a bigger company perhaps? Pretty poor reasoning there, if a company wants to charge for it's bags surely it has every right to, it doesn't have to offer them at all, surely we should all be greatful for the years of free bags we've received and accept that they will cost in the future.

our lidl has not charged for bags for over 12 months

I bought some clothes in Asda living the other day and when I said it's ok I don't need a bag I'll just put them in my Boots reusable one the SA wouldn't let me:D She said I'd rather put them in a bag in case you go into another shop even though I had a receipt as proof of purchase. she put them in the plastic bag then said now you can put them in your bag:rotfl:

If anyone has a sewing machine, you can make super ones using a pattern from this site

The bags are dead easy to make, and are really strong. I've made several for various friends and family, using old curtains, duvet covers etc

Could not agree more. I would be interested to know just how much money they will make in a 12 month period.

Perhaps they could donate it to a 'Saving the planet charity' then the public may just believe them.

Well, let me tell you it it runs into millions..

I don't really buy into this eco bag stuff. Plastic bags are BIO DEGRADABLE and rot down when buried..

There was some bloke on the telly a few months ago reporting from an island in the middle of the pacific where carrier bags were causing huge problems.

The report suggested that the bags were coming from Japan or America or somewhere..

However, taking tides etc into account the bags would have rotted and bio degraded way before they reached the middle of the pacific..

Either the bags had fallen off a passing ship or the bags had been dumped by pacific islanders....they certainly didn't get there by tidal currents..

just to let everybody know, morrisons are all this week from tomorrow(monday) giving away free reusable carrier bags, they are not as strong as the ones you pay for in there, as they are made out of a fabric of some sort, but these bags are certainly alot thicker than the normal free bags, and will certainly hold more, and last longer, hth Dave

Because Lidl/Aldi take this into account in their pricing structure!

Have Asda announced that carrier bag savings are to be ploughed into cost cutting? No...? Well, there's your answer.

Edit: I'm not against people re-using bags, far from it. What' I'm against is the supermarkets jumping on the "Eco" bandwagon simply as a way of increasing profits..

    The official line:

Thank you for your message. Thank you for contacting the ASDA Service Team. I'm sorry to hear your unhappy with our policy. We're always interested to hear what our customers think about our services. I'll certainly be passing your complaint about charging for carrier bags over to my colleagues in the policy team. We did trial this policy in some of our stores across the UK and we did get positive feedback regarding charging for carrier bags. We have now launched this policy, this is a government backed initiative to cut down on waste material. Thanks again. Lucy RobinsonASDA Service Team

when on holiday in ireland they have a no bag policy which is great you soon remember to bring bags ..... plus the streets seemed cleaner as for the tree's the only thing they wore where leaves...Since then I've dug out all my old wicker style bags and beach bags and my fabric beach bags which i fold up and put in my hand bag so i'm never caught short
It's time to give up plastic bags and go back to our grandparents way of shopping with a strong bag or shopping trolly
I know i can live without the plastic bag as i have done so for nearly a year
 wins to date..................none!! nadda... zilch... nothing not a blinking thing AT ALL .. Oh well... may be one day .:o
