The one I have is an old fashioned hand turned one, which was my parents. They are OK for slicing evenly and I wanted one so that I could slice the hams as thin as possible. The problem I have with mine is that the suckers don't grip the counter as it's not perfectly smooth so I find it hard to hold the meat in place, hold the whole lot down and turn the handle smoothly. If I turn my glass chopping board uppside down, then I can get it to grip, but really I still need someone else there to hold the board. Maybe it's just because it's old and the suckers aren't as good as they were.
Maybe it would be easier for bread as it's easier to slice anyway, but TBH, I've not used it for bread. Another problem for me was that last time I bought an absolutely HUGE ham and it was far too big for the slicer (as well as the fact that I overcooked it so it fell to bits rather than was sliced).
Maybe a leccy one would be better, but in true OS mode, I can't justify one.
My useless kitchen gadgets
Frothie maker
soda stream
cappuchino/expresso machine
food processor (but hoping to use it more now i'm going O/S)
yoghurt maker (see above)
steamer (very good one inherited from MIL but never been used)
most used item
THE KETTLE:rotfl:
also use my sandwich toaster for quick snacks for the kids, like the idea of using them to make pasties (sorry cant remember who said it)
plastic slicer thing that has assorted attatchment, use for slicing and grating.
really want a smoothie maker but resisting as i know it will go in the cupboard.em x
Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
Least used:
Deep fat dryer (can't stand the smell so if I do use it I take it out on the decking!)
Juice Lady Junior - makes horrible pithy frothy juice
Pannini Maker - just easier to make toast
Most used
Breadmaker
Electric Meat and Bread slicer
Food processor - how did I manage all those years wihtour it?Twins, twice the laughs, twice the fun, twice the mess!:j:j0 -
my steamer gets used 3 or 4 times a week, i try and do a whole meal in it or in that plus something on the mini george. mainly because i try and avoid using our range (oil prices!)
microwave used for jacket potatoes, defrosting and not much else. it'll go into the pantry once the kitchen is finished, as will the panny. panny (love it) is used 3-4 times a week, depending on how much bread/ dough we're using.
george is used as a sandwich maker so i don't need one of those. i don't use my food processor often but neeeed it when i do. more to do with the things i cook versus it being useful or notyoghurt maker used most weeks
my slow cooker i used to use lots but now i don't and think i'll end up using it to warm things for making beads. icecream maker... erm not used. yet.
things i now think i need... jam maker (my lakeland catalogue arrived this morning) remonska... i much prefer electric gadgets instead of cutters/ knifes0 -
Any more disasters and it may well come to that
Breadmakers must be male musn't they?
You never know quite what they are up to, they don't do wot they are supposed to, they make a lot of noise, keep stopping and starting, you're never quite sure when they have finished, and they are just sooo damned infuriating! But, just occasionally they surprise you with something nice

Have you tried one of the original Brown Betty pots? Never had a bad one yet but OH doesn't like it because 'the tea comes out too fast'
Just been reading back and found your ref to Brown Betty pots.... now..... what are they, what do they look like and where do I get one from?????????
Dont mean to sound so short ...but...I am all excited at the thought of a decent TEAPOT!!!
(I dont get out much):rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I had a cupboard full of useless stuff, sandwich toaster, juicer, various cutters, scrapers, shredders, storage jars, choppers, can opener that worked for about 2wks til the battery ran out(was useless anyway) and TEAPOTS,until the local scouts came calling for donations to their jumble sale, so now have an empty cupboard0 -

Me too, I`ve bought cheap ones, expensive ones, had one given me as a present and NONE of them are drip free:mad:
I had years of misery from dripping teapots (doesn't take much to upset me! ) then last year on a day out with DH I bought a blue enamel teapot because it looked nice....and lo and behold it is THE BEST teapot I ever had. Doesn't drip, makes lovely tea, looks very pretty on both the kitchen window cill and on the tea tray :j

I have a huge floor to ceiling (high ceiling) cupboard which is full of stuff that I rarely use!
I have recently had a clear out and got rid of to freecyclers:
2 slow cookers
1 electric wok
1 electric grill
1 mandolin
1 juicer
1 liquidiser
1 very very old kenwood chef which is currently sitting in my porch (I am considering selling the attachments - hence it still hanging around!
I have other items that I don't use:
-a hostess food and plate warmer (plan to ebay nearer Christmas)
-Coffee Machine (which comes complete with how to use video!)
-electric knife
-George Foreman grill
Lots of gadgets that I do use though! Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Like others my least used gadgets are a mandolin and an ice cream maker.
My morphy richards breadmaker is used less than the cheapie one I gave to my sister as I get so annoyed that the blade always sticks inside the loaf. And now I've had to give up wheat it is used even less.
I have to have a hand mixer though. Gets used for everything from mashed potatoes to whipped cream. My 23 year old electric knife gave up the ghost the other day and I do miss it.
Maybe we should do a mass swapsie. I'll swap an ice cream maker for an electric carving knife..........Newbie thread: go to the top of this page and find these words: Main site > MoneySavingExpert.com Forums > Household & Travel > Motoring > Parking Tickets, Fines & Parking.
