  • Hi
I am trying to find the best way of getting travel insurance for a year working in Canada which will also cover my travel to and from there and any travelling I may do while I am also there! The only result I get is AMEX for about £350
My Financial Advisor tells me that my Mortgage Insurance (with Friends Provident) will cover me for Medical issues while living abroad so I am kind of confused as to what to look for...
I am also thinking of applying for a credit card (incase of emergency), not having had one for 7 years now, but my bank says it will not cover theft \ misuse if I am not living in the UK...
    Does anyone have any tips?
I hope this is the right thread to post this on.
    Thanks

  • I am going on a family PGL Activity Holiday for 7 days. PGL want £18 per person for their own insurance. There are 4 of us (2 Adults & 2 Children 11yrs & 8yrs).

Holiday based in UK. Activities include abseiling, archery, canoeing, climbing, mountain biking and quad biking - although obviously not at a professional level !!

Does anyone know of any alternatives that will still provide the right cover, but perhaps cost less?
  • My partner and I are going to Amsterdam via the Hull- Rotterdam ferry for a long weekend. The quote for myself for travel insurance is outrageous. i am 66 and have a few conditions that are stable with medication . We are only out of the country 4 days, If I declare my conditions and decide not to take out the extra cover what will happen. Will I be covered for any unrelated illness or accident. The companies I have spoken to just seem to want the money and wont explain this to me. I have an ECHI card. Help !!

I'm going to Belfast at the end of August and wondered if I needed travel insurance.

If you were holidaying in the UK would you get insurance?

The same thing will happen if you declare the conditions and do not pay any extra as will happen if you do not declare the conditions at all. The Insurer will exclude any claims including medical and cancellation that are connected to the existing medical conditions
  • I found that MoneySupermarket.com did not allow me to request Family single trip quotes with a 19 year old daughter. But when selecting their 'Group' alternative the quotes were from £220 for a week in Croatia! I opted to buy a family policy and a separate single person for our daughter at total cost about £13. Is it worth noting this in the article?

    Cheers

Its fairly common as the vast majority of Travel Insurers do not regard a 19 year old as a child so are not set up to include a 19 year old dependant in their quotes. (There are companies that allow up to 22 for sons/daughters if they are in full time education)
  • I am travelling to Fort Meyers (Florida) in November.

Last year I took out a multi trip annual policy for European cover as I went to Italy in September - I only travelled once abroad. Cost was £20.69 with Travel insurance.com

If I renew with them and upgrade policy to cover USA, the cost will be £36.89

However quotes obtained on the comparison site come in from £24.

These have higher excesses though (£150 usually vs £60 current policy). Also a little less cover than via current insurers.

I travel alone. Never claimed ever. Do the more seasoned travellers think it is worth paying the extra £12 (33%) or not?

If you make a claim then its obviously not worth going with the cheaper policies as they will ultimately cost you more, if you don't make a claim then it will have saved you money
  • For any Barclays Premier Life account holders who think they have comprehensive medical cover under the travel insurance element, be aware that from 1 September 2009 Barclays insurers, SoS Insurance, have EXCLUDED all private medical cover in European countries covered by the EHIC card! Needless to say there is no reduction in monthly premium even though a major part of the travel insurance has been removed! No suprise there then!!!!

Sorry folks, but I have used Covermytravels for the past three years and due for renewal: Recommended on this forum. I am always screened and my pre-existing conditions are printed on my policy details. Last year with asthma and a hole in the heart, worldwide cover £68.00 at age 56.
